For Young ESD Leaders Capacity Building Training Course

About the Training Course

UNESCO is promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through the Global Action Programme (GAP) which was launched at the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in November 2014 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. It focuses on generating and scaling up ESD action at all levels and in all areas of education, and in all sustainable development sectors.

Youth are both beneficiaries and drivers of ESD action and are therefore granted one out of the five Action Areas within the GAP.

As contribution to implementing the GAP Action Area 4 “Youth Mobilization and Empowerment”, UNESCO and GAP Key Partners will support and prepare young ESD leaders as change agents for sustainable development through:

  1. Development of capacity building framework for Young ESD Leaders with the support of key partners and
  2. Youth-led network for exchange and collaboration on ESD
  3. Organization of Youth Conference to invited selected youth from the empowered youth through Capacity Building framework of Flagship Project (2018).

WWF Regional Office for Africa, a key GAP Partner on Youth Mobilization and Empowerment will be hosting the ESD Youth Leaders training workshop in Nairobi, Kenya in partnership with UNESCO. The workshop will comprise of ESD Youth Leaders in Africa who have made impacts in their contexts towards advancing the ESD and sustainability agenda. The workshop will be held during February 16 – 17, 2016. WWF and UNESCO will meet the full workshop costs (meals and accommodation) in Nairobi and cost of air ticket for those travelling outside Kenya. Participants will however be required to meet their own visa costs and any logistical costs within their home country.

Workshop Objectives:

This workshop will empower youth leaders to inspire and mobilize others to take action towards building more sustainable, just and resilient communities.

The workshop will seek to build the capacity of the ESD Leaders and strengthen their skills on sustainability, leadership, project management, systems thinking and conflict transformation. This will be through use of participatory methodologies that will enable the development of action competence and problem solving skills.

Who can apply

To be eligible for participation in the Training Course, you must:

1)Be between 18-35 years of age as of (December 31, 2016).

2)Have demonstrated active engagement in ESD as an educator, trainer, member of a non-governmental organization, private sector professional, policy maker, researcher, or in any other relevant capacity.

3) Have a good command of English (or the working language of the course), and be able to actively participate in all the sessions.

4)Be able to attend the full program of the Training Course, including the 2-day, in-person training and the pre and post online sessions.

5)Wish to meet, collaborate and communicate with other ESD youth leaders from around the world.

6)Have success stories or innovative initiatives to share, and wishing to contribute to the global conversation on ESD.

7)Be a founder or member of youth network.

8)Be committed to mobilize at least 5 youth peers in their community within 1 year after participating in the Workshop for ESD Youth Leaders and empower them to be actively engaged with ESD activities.

9)Be interested in being invited to participate as ESD youth representative in conferences, seminars and workshops around the world.

10)Be willing to engage with making a report on their activities at 6 months and 1 year after the workshop.

How to apply

Applicants must submit the following documents to be considered:

1)Application form: Please complete the Application Form in English. (Attached as Annex 1)

2)Recommendation letter: A letter from a head or officer of an ESD/youth-related organization or institution stating the applicant’s engagement and relevant competency in ESD. The letter must be no longer than one page, written in English, and include contact information of the signatory.
