September 29 Dale Firestone, LCSW- “FANTASY, MEMORY, AND REALITY TESTING”: A review of Jacob Arlow's article with the goal of understanding the effects of unconscious fantasy on perception, character, object relations, symptom formation, and a general goal of treatment: improved reality testing. An additional goal of the discussion is to discuss how the psychoanalytic situation facilitates access to unconscious fantasy that other forms of treatment do not.

October 13 Paul Hufnagel, Ph.D., LCSW-ART IMITATES LIFE:A PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE ON THE LIFE, LOVES AND ART OF FRIDA KAHLO Frida Kahlo, now considered one of the most influential and enigmatic artists of the twentieth century, was also a deeply troubled and tormented soul. Kahlo’s brief life is a canvas of heroic struggle to overcome tragedy, pain and betrayal. After viewing excerpts from the 2002 film, Frida, directed by Julie Taymor, participants will discuss and explore ways in which maternal deprivation, trauma and developmental events in Kahlo’s life scripted her not only toward stormy and unstable relationships but also shaped her brilliant and unique artistic expression.

November 10 Ron Fleischmann, MD- RESILIENCE TO TRAUMA: What factors contribute to resilience and what therapeutic interventions enhance an individual’s ability to survive and adjust in the face of traumatic episodes – utilizing holocaust trauma as examples. Articles from two books: “the Unbroken Soul” and “Children in Genocide”

February 16 Al Burstein, PhD-READING BETWEEN THE LINES: THE ANALYSIS OF PHANTASY: Consideration of the ways in which imagined stories (fantasies) project significant personality issues. Two psychological tests that center on eliciting stories: The TAT and the Van Lenneps Four Picture test will be discussed. The group will be involved in two activities: writing a response to the Van Lenneps, and then analyzing a response by a patient who had taken the test.

March 23 Denise Dorsey, MD “FEMALE EXHIBITIONISM: IDENTIFICATION, COMPETITION, AND COMRADERIE”: Int. J. Psychoanal (2012) 93:271-292 by Deanna Holtzman and Nancy Kulish. Participants will discuss a pre- circulated paper after Dr Dorsey gives a brief history of the changing views on this topic. Participants are invited to bring clinical examples from their own practice to share with the group.

April 20 Doug Pool, MD and Erik Whitfield, MD-THE ILLUSION OF UNITARY SELFHOOD: Two cases of D I D will be presented and discussed. We will then talk aboutourideasconcerning self-states and dissociation.

May 18 Talaat Mohammed, MD PERVERSIONS, FETISHISM AND SADOMASOCHISM

The fetish is regarded as a replacement for the lost female phallus, specifically the phallus of the mother. The significance of the fetish is its protective measure and safeguard of the threat of castration during the phallic oedipal developmental phase.
