Road Trip…..
Overview:
For this project, you are planning and taking a “virtual” road trip with a classmate or two. Your goal is to take a trip in the USA and visit at least seven required attractions, while adhering to the following parameters. You will document all aspects of your trip along the way. This is your chance to plan a “dream vacation.”
My Travel Companion(s): ______
Region(s) I Most Want to Visit: ______
Parameters:
1. You and a classmate (or 2) will be traveling together. You must take along a responsible adult to do the driving and to ensure safety.
2. You have a budget of $1000 PER PERSON. You and your travel buddy will keep track of expenses separately. Some expenses will be shared, such as gas and lodging.
3. You will be gone 9 days, Saturday through the following Sunday. You leave on day 1 and return on day 9. Your trip begins and ends at your school.
4. You must visit or travel through at least three more states (four total including Ohio).
5. Each day you may travel no more than 500 miles. Your average speed each day will be 65 mph.
6. You may choose the type of vehicle you will be traveling in; however, you should consider the comfort and the miles per gallon (mpg) of the vehicle. You may choose to drive an RV, which you can also sleep in during your trip at a campground.
7. You must keep track of the money you use on gas. The price per gallon will be $_____. You will need to find out how many gallons of gas your vehicle holds and how many miles per gallon (mpg) it gets.
8. You must pay for at least two meals a day, and one of these meals must be served in a restaurant by a waiter/waitress, which requires a tip (18%). All food will be taxed. The tax rate is _____ %.
9. You will decide the location and type of accommodations for sleeping (hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, campground, etc.) each night (at least 7 hours). If you choose to travel in an RV, you can park the RV at a rest stop no more than two nights. For the rest of your trip, you must find a campground to park your RV for the night. If you decide to camp, you must travel in a vehicle that is large enough to store camping supplies, such as a truck or van.
10. You must visit ALL of the following SEPARATE places on your road trip. You must spend at least one hour at each attraction. Of these required places, only two of them can be free. If you have enough time and money, you can include more than seven attractions in your itinerary. Brainstorm some ideas for your attractions below and include the STATE where each is located.
state or national park: ______
museum: ______
geographical wonder or landmark (lake, ocean, river, mountains, glacier, Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, etc.): ______
sports arena: ______
historical landmark or battlefield: ______
zoo: ______
your choice (amusement park, waterpark, another of the above, etc.): ______
Researching and choosing your “Road Trip” vehicle
For this task, do the following:
1. Research vehicles, considering size, comfort, fuel economy, and gas tank size. The gas tank size is important so that you know when you have to fill up your gas tank and how much it will cost.
2. Decide on the vehicle you and your partner will use for travel. Remember, if you choose an RV, truck, or van, you may save money on lodging but you will pay more for gas.
3. Decide what the odometer reading will be to start.
4. Determine the maximum amount of miles you can travel on a full tank of gas.
5. Record all of this information below.
Type of vehicle (year, make, and model): ______
Max. # of passengers:______MSRP: ______
Size of the gas tank: ______Starting odometer reading: ______
MPG: city ______; highway ______; combined ______
With a full tank, you will run out of gas when you travel approximately ______miles. Using combined MPG, show calculations below:
