Classroom News

Reading: The second ELA Common Assessment will be administered throughout the Language Arts block this week. First, your child will read two texts and answer comprehension questions involving story structure, sequence of events, cause and effect, character analysis, and dictionary skills. Then, your child will read a third text and be asked to answer questions and cite text evidence in detail. Next, the children will read a fourth passage and answer questions that will assess their understanding of targeted grammar skills taught. Finally, the children will write to inform by responding to a writing prompt. They will complete an organizer and then a draft. J

Science (Soils): This week the children will use their senses to describe the properties of sand, clay, and humus, and test their soil samples with a rolling test and smearing test. They will wet each soil to determine which soil rolls into a ball. We’ll leave our soils balls dry overnight and observe changes the next morning. Ask your child on Thursday which soil (sand, clay, or humus) rolled into a ball and stayed in a ball. On Friday, we plan to perform smear tests and settling tests on our soil samples. Science is messy and fun! J

Miscellaneous: Mark your calendars for next Friday night! It’s the Family Dinner Dance from 5:30-9:00PM! When you pay in advance, you will receive a purple wristband if you signed up for the dance/dessert buffet only. You will receive an orange wristband if you signed up for the dinner and dance. Please let me know if you would like me to send home another ticket order form! The catering will be done by Vinny’s and will include Baked Ziti and Caesar Salad. Families are asked to bring a dessert to donate. There may even be a dessert contest. J
