Title: National Sports Development Coordinator (part-time)

Purpose of the Role

The National Sports Development Coordinator will work to promote the VisionSports ethos: ideally, every single vision impaired person, irrespective of age, level ofsight or fitness, should be able to participate, in so far as possible, in the sports,leisure and social activities of their choice.

Accountability

The National Sports Development Coordinator will be responsible to the Chairman ofVision Sports Ireland.

Office Location

The National Sports Development Coordinator will work from offices located in

National Council for the Blind (NCBI) Offices, Whitworth Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

Salary:Up to €21,000 (depending on qualifications and experience).

Hours:Up to 24 hours per week (flexible and willing to work evenings andweekends).

Duration of Employment: up to 50 weeks fixed term contract.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. ROLE

➢Help increase the range of opportunities for vision impaired people to participate insporting activities throughout Ireland.

➢Work with national and voluntary organisations, and local bodies to deliverVision Sports objectives.

➢ Act as a conduit and central point of contract for vision impaired sportspeople,their families and friends as well as the wider circle of interested groupings.

➢ Promote the Vision Sports Ireland Sports Development Programme whichfunds specific groups and individuals.

➢ Promote the three Vision Sports Ireland members’ types: full, friends/familyand support

➢ As required, arrange training and/or competitions to support vision impairedpeople.

➢ As required, Liaise with NCBI staff to increase the participation of people with a vision impairment in sport.

➢ Support the organisation of MayFest, the annual multi-sports weekend forvision impaired sportspeople.

➢ Visit the regions to promote core sports message as well as attendance andpresenting at key national meetings of priority groupings.

➢ Identify, recruit, train, monitor and mentor bothvolunteers and coaches.

➢ Support Vision Sports Ireland in its fundraising endeavours.

➢ Develop supports for vision impaired people participating in sports.

➢ Audit and review level of participation and make recommendations.

➢ Maintain accurate records.

➢ Evaluate activities using key performance indicators.

2. TASKS

Objectives, milestones, and deliverables will be agreed in line with the duration of the

Contract.

➢ Identify and systematically develop sports best suited to vision impairedpeople, commencing with existing core sports.

➢ Subject to available finances promote the Vision Sports Ireland Sports Development Programme: Build and maintain the Direct Support Programmewhich provides essential, financial support, through grants, to blind/visionimpaired individuals to enable participation in a specific sport.

➢Build and maintain the Group Activity Support Fund which provides assistance topeople who wish to partake in a scheduled group activity such as walking, tandem cycling and swimming.

➢ Liaise, by means of phone/email and in person, with those parties seekinginformation on sport for vision impaired people.

➢ In conjunction with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and their associatedclubs as well as Local Sports Partnership (LSP) Disability Sports InclusionDisability Officers (SIDOs) arrange (not necessarily organise) training and competitions.

➢ Identify, recruit, and in association with NGBs and any other relevant parties,

arrange volunteers and coaching training.

➢ Work closely with Vision Sports Ireland MayFest organisation in the planning and rollout of MayFest.

➢ Visit regions and meet relevant NCBI staff and resource workers, LSPP SIDOs, collegeDisability Officers, primary and post-primary school physical educationteachers as well as vision impaired people themselves.

➢Conduct a GAP analysis on the existing provision (geographic spread,gender and age, etc) and then to design and implement measures of redress.

➢Support vision impaired sports people to overcome barriers in areas ofintegration in sports groupings, any adaptive equipment required as well as additional expenses.

➢Support Vision Sports in the promotion of sport for vision impaired peoplethrough full utilisation of social media, particularly in the area of promoting upcoming events/dissemination of information/results, etc.

➢ Work with the Board of Vision Sports Ireland in the area of attractingsponsorship, promoting our direct donor programme, supporting charity sportsevents and fundraising social activities.

➢Adhere to the appropriate financial management and reporting procedures at all times.

Key Capabilities

The National Sports Development Coordinator will possess the following capabilities:

❖ Hold a third level qualification (diploma/degree) in sports development, relevant discipline or relevant experience.

❖ Experience in working with sports people with disabilities (including visionimpairment).

❖ An understanding of the barriers and issues affecting participating in sport byvision impaired people.

❖ Have excellent report writing, presentation, communication, organisational andinterpersonal skills.

❖ Be fully fluent in both written and oral English.

❖ Exhibit strong leadership skills together with a high level of drive andcommitment to the role.

❖ Excellent planning skills.

❖ Strong office IT skills.

❖ Strong social media skills.

❖ Be a proactive team player and possess the ability to work well in a dynamicenvironment.

❖ Demonstrate an energetic, self-motivated and flexible approach in all respects.

❖ Commitment to work flexible hours (including evening and weekends asrequested).

❖ Public transport will be the preferred mode of travel. Where private transport isnecessary a clean driver’s licence, with access to car, is required.

Contract

Report to VISION SPORTS IRELAND Chair/Board of Directors.

Up to 50-week fixed term part-time contract based on average three-day week (one week:

up to 24 hours) to include a probationary period.

Salary (negotiable) up to €21,000 annually – payable monthly.

Expenses:

This job description should be viewed as an outline of the principal duties andresponsibilities of the National Sports Development Coordinator as seen to beappropriate to the post at this stage of the development. The managementarrangements for the role will, therefore, be subject to further refinement and review asthe structure evolves.
