Stamp Game

Materials:

A wooden box divided into four sections holding sets of small colored, wooden tiles (stamps) labeled and color coded as follows: 1000 – green, 100 – red, 10 – blue, and 1 – green. Small decimal numeral cards in a box. Green, red and blue discs which are used to be place holders for zero. A set of nine skittles in green, nine in blue, and nine in red to represent the divisor for units, tens, and hundreds. A set of slightly larger green skittles to represent the thousands. Black, green, red, blue, and yellow pencils. Prepared paper to record problems on. Problem cards. Table.

For the Introduction to the Stamp Game you also need the One Tray.

Preparation:

Extensive work with the four operations using the Golden Bead (Bank) materials.

Age: 5 ½ + years.

Direct Aims:

To further develop an understanding of the four operations in the decimal system.

Indirect Aims:

To move toward abstraction in the four operations.

To develop order, concentration, coordination and independence.

Note – At this point read numerals, e.g. one thousand, two hundred, sixty, three, as the child has done a lot of linear counting by now

.

Presentation I - Introduction to the Stamp Game:

Variation:

  1. Compare the stamps to the Golden Beads by having the child get the quantities from the Bank.

Presentation II – Formation of Numbers

Presentation III – Handful Exchanging:

Variation:

  1. When exchanging count the 10 stamps into a cup. Pour the 10 stamps into the box as you take a stamp from the next category.
  2. Write the numeral on prepared paper with color coded pencils.

Presentation IV– Static Addition:

Presentation V – Dynamic Addition:

Dynamic addition is the same as static addition except exchange when necessary.

Presentation VI – Static Multiplication:

Presentation VII – Dynamic Multiplication:

Dynamic multiplication is the same as static multiplication except exchange when necessary.

Presentation VIII – Static Subtraction

Presentation IX – Dynamic Subtraction:

Extension:

  1. Use a cup to place the stamp that is being exchanged into while you count out 10 stamps from the next smallest category.

Presentation X – Static Division

Presentation XI – Dynamic Division:

Extension:

  1. Use a cup to put the stamp being exchanged in and for the remainder, if any.

Vocabulary:

Stamp Game, stamps.

Points of Interest:

Using the stamps to do the four operations.

The skittles and sharing the stamps out equally in division.

Writing the problems with the color coded pencils.

Control of Error:

Colors of the stamps.

The numerals on the stamps.

The child’s ability to count the stamps accurately.

Variations:

Extensions:

  1. Use the numeral cards instead of writing on the prepared paper with the color coded pencils.
  2. Use prepared problem cards or worksheets.
  3. Use ‘stamps’ to glue on paper to represent their numerals and problems as this was how this work was originally done.

Notes:
