POST OF JUNIOR DEAN

FURTHER PARTICULARS

  1. The primary responsibility of the Junior Deansis to the Dean of Brasenose College. Junior Deans are appointed to serve for a period of one year, which may be renewed, and assist the Dean and other College Officers by promoting good relations and a positive atmosphere in College. In particular, the presence in College and Frewin of the Junior Deans provides a supplementary channel of communication between Senior and Junior Members.The post of Junior Dean requires a mature person of good judgement, discretion, an ability to relate to people at all levels and a high degree of flexibility to respond to a wide range of unpredictable situations.
  1. The main duty of the Junior Deans is to support the Dean in his or her activities, and particularly:
  1. To assist in preventing infringements of the College Rules and to report to the Dean any such infringements. While the Junior Deans have no authority to discipline individuals, which is a matter for the Dean, it is hoped that alertness and prompt intervention will help to promote good relations between the Undergraduates and the Fellows, and that he or she will help to ensure good behaviour and adherence to the provisions of the College ‘Blue Book’, which sets out College policy on discipline.
  1. To assist the Deanand Porters in maintaining the security of the College and of Frewin.
  1. When necessary, to co-operate with the Bar Manager and Porters in ensuring the orderly closing of the College Bar and to maintain order and low noise levels in the vicinity of the Bar and elsewhere in the late evenings.
  1. To receive notice of functions to be held in College or Frewin by Junior Members, to ensure good order at these functions and to ensure that these functions finish at the proper time and in accordance with the arrangements agreed.
  1. To maintain regular contact with the Chaplain, Domestic Bursar, Frewin Night Porterand other College Officers and to meet regularly with the Dean and other Junior Deans in term time to arrange the conduct of decanal business.
  1. To maintain contacts with the HCR and JCR Committees as well as College Societies and Clubs.
  1. To know and be known by students and be able to offer pastoral and welfare assistance to those in difficulty. In addition, to liaise with other members of the College with pastoral and welfare responsibilities and to refer cases appropriately.
  1. To consult with the Dean in the appropriate division of tasks between members of decanal staff to ensure that an appropriate decanal presence is provided in both the College and Frewin sites. It is expected that the Junior Deans will take particular responsibility for conduct in College and agree to be contactable to deal with disciplinary and welfare issues as they arise.
  1. To liaise with the Porters and the Senior Tutor during the Admissions period (typically weeks 9 & 10 of Michaelmas Term), and to provide general oversight of the candidates while they are in Brasenose.Also to be available to the end of 9th week in both Hilary and Trinity Terms.
  1. To act as a Fire Marshall when available including assistance should evacuation be necessary. Fire alarms on the main site are dealt with by the Porters on a 24-hour basis. At the Frewin site, night cover is provided by the Night Porter and at other times by the Maintenance/Handy person supported by the University Security Services at all times. As Fire Marshalls, the Junior Deans are expected to familiarise themselves with the operation of the Fire control panels and evacuation procedures in case of an unexpected emergency. Training in Fire Marshall duties will be provided.
  1. The employment will commence on 1 September 2015 for twelve months, expiring on 30 August 2016, unless otherwise terminated under clause9or for any other reason.
  1. If a Junior Dean will still be member of Brasenose in the following year, he/she may apply to remain as Junior Dean in the following academic year.
  1. The Junior Deans will be provided with free single accommodation for the period of their employment. They will be required to sign the standard tenancy agreement relevant to the room, with the term adjusted to cover the period of their employment. They may be required to vacate their room for two weeks during the summer vacation for repairs and maintenance, such time to be determined if possible by mutual agreement, although the College reserves the right if necessary to specify the week but will provide at least two months’ notice.
  1. During the weeks 0-10 of Full Term,they will be entitled to 5 lunches and 3 dinners at the Common Table each week. One guest may be brought to dinner, but guests are not permitted at lunch. Other meals may be taken in the body of the Hall (i.e. not on High Table) free of charge. The cost of meals for guests, and of all wines and other drinks taken by a Junior Dean or a guest, will be charged to the Junior Dean. Additionally, Junior Deans may also take 3 Common Table lunches and 2 Common Table dinners outside weeks 0-10 of full terms.
  1. The stipend will be £3107 per annum, payable monthly (subject to August 2015pay review). A budget is available for hosting welfare meetings with junior members.
  1. The Junior Deans are required to be members of Brasenose College and, if necessary, to migrate from their present colleges. For the period of their appointment Junior Deans will become guests of the Senior Common Room and have appropriate privileges.
  1. Unless otherwise stated, the appointment will be reviewed after a probationary period of one termand, subject to satisfactory performance, be confirmed for the remainder of the year.The position can be terminated by either College or the Junior Dean with two months’ written notice.
  1. The Junior Dean will work no more than 20 hours per week.

  1. Significant relevant experience including understanding College and University life and structures
  2. Matriculated member of the University in a course of graduate study
  3. Sufficient academic standard to be a graduate student of BNC
  4. Experience demonstrating the need for excellent inter-personal skills with the ability to relate to a wide range of people and to establish effective working relationships
