FINAL REPORT

March 2014

Foreword

The Disability Sport Fife (DSF) 7s League has come to an end and firstly congratulations to Balwearie HS for winning the senior and junior sections of the League this year. The Balwearie HS senior team will now qualify to represent Fife at the National Championships at Ravenscraig on Wed 28 May and I am waiting to hear from David McArdle if Fife is being offered a second place at the finals as in previous years. The introduction of the S1/S2 tournament was enormously successful and we thank all schools who participated in this first year. It is our intention to include senior and junior sections within the 2015 7s League programme.

I hope you enjoy reading this year’s report. The report identifies match scores and the leading goal scorer and top goalkeeper. May I thank Buckhaven HS, Madras College and Bell Baxter HS for signing up for the League this year. I am aware that Glenrothes HS is working hard to try and engage in the League next year. That would mean 100% turnout of Fife Secondary Schools with DAS departments. Congratulations to the combined Madras College/Bell Baxter HS S1/S2 team who challenged Balwearie HS to the final minute of the final game and in effect lost out by only a single goal, in Series2. Runners-up spot in the first year of taking part is an immense achievement.

Special thanks again to David McArdle of the Scottish FA who continues to enthusiastically support the DSF football programme. DSF received an unexpected grant from the Scottish FA this year to run the 7s League programme and we are indebted to David and his colleagues. Participating schools are also indebted to the Scottish FA, and David specifically, for the award of six footballs on presentation day along with the salvers and medals. Awards will also be made to leading goal scorer and goalkeeper in due course, confirming the significant level of support that the Scottish FA provides for DSF as a key partner.

DSF is also indebted to the Fife Referees Association and would thank in particular Derek Lowe, the Area Co-ordinator. Special thanks to Alistair Watt and John Cooper who have been in attendance at all the 7s League matches during 2014. Our thanks also to Kevin Lee, East Regional Manager of the Scottish FA who has indicated an interest in supporting the DSF coach led programme. This is a major element of our annual football development programme.

Kirkcaldy HS has become a major partner of DSF and DSF acknowledges Derek Allan, the Rector and Principal Teacher of PE, Malcolm Stewart, in particular. Kirkcaldy HS pupils and staff have given up their 7s pitches during the lunch period on three occasions this year to enable DSF to organise the 7s League. We are indebted to all concerned. DSF has strengthened its links with Kirkcaldy HS as a partner by inviting senior High School sports leaders to assist with the DSF Fife Swimming Championships. Kirkcaldy HS sports leaders will again be involved at the DSF Track and Field Championships at Pitreavie later in the year. DSF acknowledges Kirkcaldy HS as a key special partner.

Last, but by no means least. DSF congratulates the schools staff who spend so much time preparing their pupils for the 7s League. We must never underestimate the amount of time and effort it takes to develop a team and it is a credit to all the participating schools to note how far we have come since the first event just over three years ago. The behaviour on the field of play of each and every school pupil is outstanding. Each year the referees remark on the level of sportsmanship which is evident at the DSF 7s League. It is easy to win well but it is not always easy to lose well. In this little group of participating schools we have staff and pupils who strongly believe in fair play. DSF wishes Balwearie HS every success at the 2014 National Championships. DSF will soon be announcing some exciting new collaborative football initiatives with the Scottish FA Fife Council Football Development Officers.
