"Lake Superior Centre for Regenerative Medicine receives Designation from the Trillium Gift of Life Network

The Lake Superior Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Inc. (RegenMed) is a not-for-profit charitable organization with a focus on excellence in tissue and bone banking . In 2007, a state of the art processing facility capable of producing conventional as well as highly specialized allograft bioimplants for use in dentistry and medicine was completed. Our tissue and bone processing technology supports better clinical outcomes, a benefit that serves everyone. Enhance the quality of life for bioimplant recipient.

In the Auditor General of Ontario’s Report 2010 it was stated that;

A 2010 study commissioned by Canadian Blood Services noted that the Canadian demand for bone can be expected to undergo strong growth in coming years because an increasing number of procedures using bone (such as hip replacements) are being performed, mostly as a result of the aging population.

RegenMed was created to address the shortage of allografts available to Canadian surgeons and patients. An allograft is a graft of tissue obtained from a human donor with a different genetic make-up and surgically implanted into the human recipient, as a tissue transplant between two humans. As stated above, it is expected that this need will continue to grow. Currently millions of dollars are being spent to import allografts from the United States. In the past however, allografts have not always been available to import and as the US economy rebounds this will again be the case in the near future. Canada will be unable to fill the growing need for allografts unless we address the problem now. RegenMed is part of the solution.

Through past and present relationships with US Tissue Banks, LifeNet Health, Community Tissue Services, and Allosource RegenMed has been trained in advanced processing techniques and we have created our own program to produce a sterile allograft of the same quality currently being imported from the US.

RegenMed has been registered with Health Canada as a Tissue Bank since 2007 and has recently been designated by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Trillium gift of Life Network . This provincial designation is an important milestone in our journey and will allow RegenMed to create a local donor recovery program. Donor recovery and processing will enhance the distribution of Canadian processed tissue to TBRHSC and other Ontario hospitals. Working with the TBRHSC, the goal of RegenMed is to provide an increased opportunity for the residents of NWO to give the gift of life.

Currently the Lake Superior Centre for Regenerative Medicine is supplying over 20 Ontario hospitals and dentists with quality allografts to help meet the ever increasing needs of Ontarians.
