This will be Keep Ohio Beautiful’s firstGreat Ohio Planting Dayto focus on elementary school tree plantings. The northwestern Ohio location was chosen because of the destruction of Lucas County’s ash trees bythe invasive Emerald Ash Borer.
Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful (KT/LCB), Keep Ohio Beautiful, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry have partnered with The Davey Tree Expert Co. to create a Master Tree Planting Plan for Wayne Trails Elementary School. The day will include tree plantings of two areas around the school, including a wildlife sanctuary to be used by the students. Students and teachers will learnhow to properly prepare a tree site, and plant and care for a treeduring this hands-on educational program.
“Davey is pleased to be involved in such a worthwhile event. Teaching kids about the many benefits trees can provide and actually showing them how to plant and care for newly planted trees is a learning experience that will last a lifetime,” said KOB board member and Davey Resources Group natural resource consulting manager Karen Wise. "KT/LCB isthrilled to be offering this first-time project to Wayne Trail Elementary, especially given the amazing efforts of their science teacher Christine Smith. She is truly a model teacher for the environment, and thisproject is one way we can recognize herefforts and reward the entirecommunity,”addedKOB board member and KT/LCB executive director Juliana Sample.
The Great Ohio Fall Planting Day coincides with America Recycles Day.
