WEINER ON RADIO AMERICA 6:30 PM SATURDAY: SUPREME COURT AGREES DON’T HOLD GUANTANAMO PRISONERS SIX YEARS WITH FLIMSY EVIDENCE TO HIDE WEAKNESS OF CASES
(Washington, DC) – Ex-Clinton White House staffer Robert Weiner appears on Radio America “Battle Line” this Saturday, 6:30 PM Eastern Time (500 cities and when airs click "Listen Live", and on Nathan site starting Monday archived for six weeks), hostAlan Nathan: Weiner debated Gary Alldrich, conservative, concerning the Supreme Court's Guantanamo decision supporting habeas corpus and opposing holding prisoners for as much as six years without trials. The segment was taped this morning.
Weiner asked Aldrich, a former FBI agent, how he explained “his agency, the FBI, specifically opposing the CIA's torture techniques and making the case against it to the administration but being overruled.” Weiner says Alldrich’s answer was, “’They do a different type of prisoner,’ which I saidwas nonsense, since of course the FBI also handles terrorism. I also brought out how Colin Powell made points that regular prisons could handledetainees under regular legal procedures and we havehave two million plus innormal prisonsincluding high profile prisoners andhorrible violent people.”
“I explained (as the Washington Post said today) that the Supreme Court was not saying don'tinterrogate terrorists, but don't holdsomefor six years without cause on flimsy evidence where it's a matter of not wanting to expose the weakness of your case in many instances.”
Weiner quoted House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers' statement after the ruling, "The Court was rightly outraged that some of the parties in this case had been held for six years without being given the right to challenge." Weiner also alluded to President Bush's latest statement that while he will honor the ruling, he proposed congressional legislation to override the Supreme Court (Weiner said he “doubts Congress would come close to letting it pass.”)
Weiner has written two opeds in The Cleveland Plain Dealer on this issue:
