September is Latino Health Awareness Month

The Central Valley Celebrates with Nutrition and Health Education

and Inspiring Messages from Local Leaders

Fresno, Calif. (August 22, 2006) The Valley’s Latino community is celebrating Latino Health Awareness month with healthy inspirations by local leaders and free nutrition and health education on September 10 at Fiesta Foods.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., attendees will hear inspiring messages from local celebrities and enjoy a variety of activities and education opportunities with the Central Valley Nutrition Network and the Latino 5 a Day Campaignincluding; fun physical activities, 5 a Day food demonstrations, nutrition education activities, all supplemented by freeeducational handouts. The event will also feature a live Univision radio remote in the Fiesta Foods parking lot, located at 3190 E. Tulare Street in Fresno.

Speakers include State Assemblyman Juan Arambula and Univision Morning Show host Lupita Lomeli. Arambula will provide the event’s welcoming remarks and provide perspective the significance of Latino health awareness. Lomeli will present a media perspective on health and discuss the importance worksite wellness.

“We have invited these community leaders to speak on behalf of Latino health because we feel these individuals are people the Latino community can identify with,” said Eustolia Zamora-Bonilla, Latino 5 a Day Campaign Coordinator. “These leaders can really enforce the importance of improving nutrition and physical activity among California’s Latino population.”

Arambula and Fiesta Foods owner Benjamin Bequer Sr. will tour the produce section to discuss different fruits and vegetables and the importance of their consumption in living a healthy lifestyle.

Bonilla said the event will both celebrate Latino Health Awareness Month and provide important health education to the Latino community. “In commemoration of Latino

Health Awareness Month, the Latino 5 a Day Campaign and Fiesta Foods will address the needs of low-income Latinos in the home and in the workplace by encouraging them to make healthier food choices and staying physically active every day,” Bonilla said.
