NOVEMBER 2017 (Chicago) – Morpho Gallery presents four artists from our 2017 Spring National Juried Photography Show, where juror Doug Fogelson selected: Kristin Cass, Lindsey Altongy, William Whitten, and Joan Ladendorf as the best of the show.We exhibited 14 artists and over 50 photographs in the National Juried Photography Show.
Kristin Cass is a Chicago-based photographer. Her work is animated by her concern for social and human rights issues, and her relationship to urban life. With a background in art history and design, Kristin believes in art as a medium for change. She is also trained as a lawyer, defining her commitment to social justice. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago.
Kristin Cass’s photo series is titled, Landscapes of the Imagination, where in the dark times, she has often retreated to places she imagined. Although these images themselves seem lovely, they all contain dark memories of times of intense struggle throughout history. They are pages from a journal of difficult journeys in hard times. These are some of the places where she has stepped out of ordinary life, trying to escape, only to come face to face with her deepest emotions. From these places have come revelation, inspiration, healing, and hope.
Lindsey Altongy is a photographer from Springfield, New Jersey, currently residing in Chicago. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Documentary Studies from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Using 35mm black and white film as her medium, Lindsey appreciates the tools of the past and the careful processes of the darkroom. She photographs inanimate objects, discarded oddities, and fringe scenes with a portrait-like perspective, glorifying places and things that may otherwise seem insignificant. In addition to her photographic pursuits, Lindsey has practiced and studied finger style guitar technique and theory for nine years.
William Whitten: “I see what others cannot, I am a photographer.” William Whitten is a portrait, street-dance photographer who likes to observe the world around him. He takes pride in researching his subject matter in order to bring out the full story in his pictures. William is currently working in a portrait studio in Chicago, where he is able to work with his clients and retain the best part of their lives in a photograph.
Joan Ladendorf: “Photography is the current stop on my creative journey. It’s a place I’ve visited before, back in the old days of film and darkrooms. My focus is on local sites, including my backyard creek, auto junkyards, the Chicago Botanic Garden, Spring Valley Nature Center, the Illinois Railway Museum and many other great facilities. It’s a pleasure to return to image capturing pursuits, as it allows one a finer appreciation for the beauty of our planet and the many visual opportunities it offers. Although the switch to digital was tough at first, I have now fully embraced it and all the accoutrements, like Photoshop, which was used to create all of these featured works. A collector at heart, I traipse around adding details, landscapes, patterns, textures and colors to my toolbox, for use as straight images, as layers, or as ingredients in my composite work.
