George Washington in the Dumbarton House Collection.
A Collections Conversation.
Munch while you learn: Stop in for a refreshing lunch break, 12:30pm on WednesdayFebruary 3 and discover Dumbarton House's Federal Period and decorative arts collection while enjoying your brown bag lunch! Deputy director and curator at the Society of the Cincinnati's Anderson House, Emily L. Schulz will present a lecture on George Washington’s presence in Dumbarton House’s collection. Ms Schulz will be highlighting two key objects in our collection- a portrait miniature of George Washington, a contemporary copy of an Edward Savage painting; and a tumbler, or ‘camp cup,’ one of a set of twelve commissioned by George Washington and handed down through family and relations.
In the heart of Dupont Circle, Anderson House, a turn of the century Beaux-Arts mansion is home to the Society of the Cincinnati and was designated a National Historic Landmark. The House’s rich and varied collections include those belonging to the Society, the Anderson family anda Revolutionary War collection, so the historic museum’s curators have a vast and diverse knowledge of Washingtonian history. Come and appreciate the marriage of collections and knowledge from two institutions- the expertise of Anderson House’s curators complementing the collection at Dumbarton House.
“Collections Conversations” are a bi-monthly series presented by Dumbarton House staff experts and guest scholars who share the stories of selected objects in an informal discussion about the history and use of the object.
Admission to all Collections Conversations is free. Brown bag lunches are welcome. All Collections Conversation programs are held in the Belle Vue Room, on the lower level. Reservations for groups of five or more are requested. Not interested in brown bagging it? If we have 5 or more requests, we will order a selected box lunch from a favorite Georgetown eatery (sandwich or salad selection, chips, beverage, and cookie), and have it delivered by 12:00noon. $15.00 per person by prior reservation and payment. To inquire about this lunch option: .
Also, join us for future Collections Conversations:
Wednesday April 14 at 12:30pm; Wednesday June 9 at 12:30pm; and Wednesday August 11 at 12:30pm (I got this off the calendar but it’s a bit confusing, there aren’t any details and they’re massively spaced apart. Are these all lectures by the same curator?)
