For each chart, compare and contrast 2 -3 poets in relation to a particular theme or stylistic feature. When all work is completed, you must reference at least 4 poems for each poet, and you should have details and commentary related to 12 poems minimum. In addition, address the following as you compose the review:

1.  Theme: Find a theme that each poet explores in his/her poetry. In a sentence or two, briefly explain what that poet suggests about said theme.

2.  Imagery/Symbolism/Metaphor: Identify visual and non-visual imagery that is important in discussing the overall meaning of the poem. Explore how the poets use symbolism and/or metaphor. What is the significance of the comparisons being made?

3.  Shift/structure: Identify the shift. What changes take place in terms of tone, subject, point of view, setting, etc.? How does the poem’s structure relate to the poem’s meaning? (One of the three questions will almost certainly be about STRUCTURE).

4.  Irony: How is irony, contrast, paradox used? For what purpose? What effect does its inclusion have on the poem?

5.  Tone: What is the speaker’s attitude toward the subject? Does the tone shift, or is it consistent? Does the poem contain a contradictory tone that serves as an undercurrent to the main tone?

6.  Compelling quotes: Choose 3 or more significant quotes from each poem.

7.  Other: Include any other salient features of the poem (e.g. connotation, sound devices, enjambment, etc.).

There are two deadlines: April 25 for the first two charts, May 1 for the completed assignment.
