Below is an overview of the curriculum thatP2/Room4a will cover this session. Please be advised that this is a broad overview which may be altered and adapted to meet the needs of individual pupils as required.

Curricular Area / Content
Expressive Arts /
  • Performances and presentations – Class Assembly/golden jotter assembly, Topical Assemblies e.g. St Andrew’s Day, Robert Burns.
  • Art & Design – developing skills and techniques relating to design, working with different media and using visual elements to communicate ideas related to various topics, creating 3D models/ junk modelling, experimenting with collage, experimenting with patterns.
  • Dance –Show simple actions and body control while sharing space with others in dance. Become aware dance is purposeful and generates a feeling of well being. Be able to observe and describe some simple actions.
  • Drama- Developing skills with games and activities to enhance speaking and listening, co-operation and concentration. Participating in relevant topical drama activities such as exploring how creatures move under the sea..
  • Music– Singing to enhance literacy and numeracy skills, under the sea inspired music and and instruments, keeping the beat in a piece of music, musical appreciation and discussing feelings on pieces of music.

Health & Wellbeing /
  • Mental and emotional wellbeing learning to share and care for others, anti-bullying, turn taking, respecting our bodies. Following the Paths programme.
  • Social wellbeing e.g. keeping safe at home, safe routes to school/road safety, internet safety and stranger danger, developing a sense of rights and responsibilities through the understanding of class rules and consequences using reward schemes in class and House Points throughout the wider school community.
  • Physical wellbeing e.g. care of teeth and gums, making healthy choices in food and exercise, personal hygiene.
  • Planning for choices & changes e.g. exploring and making choices in everyday activities in order to develop our learning, working with others.
  • Physical education, physical activity & sport–Improving health and fitness through a wide range of activities such as 1k, ball skills, games and yoga.
  • Food & Health - examining healthy food choicesand practising social skills required for eating with others at class snack times.
  • Substance misuse e.g. what goes into my body? Is it safe?
Relationships, sexual health & parenthood different parts of the body, where living things come from, discussing bereavement and how to cope with a loss.
Religious & Moral Education /
  • The children will be exploring the Parable of the Sower, within christianity.
  • They will also be exploring Kisa Gotami, within Buddhism.
  • The will become familiar with the story of Christmas.

Sciences /
  • Materials – The children will be exploring floating and sinking through active learning, discussion and observation.
  • Topical Science - The children will learn to observe and talk about what they see, offer ideas about what might happen, record appropriately and display their learning. They will be learning about life under the sea.

Modern Languages /
  • Spanish- Numbers to 30, Colours, Greetings and sharing of personal information, days of the week, Christmas in Spain.

Social Studies /
  • Some topics will be studied in depth during P2 and others will be mini
topics. E.g. Under the Sea, Halloween, St Andrew and Christmas around
the world,..
Technologies /
  • Technological developments in society e.g. recycling, the impact of modern day inventions
  • ICT to enhance learning e.g. accessing the internet and using it safely, creating folders and files, online educational activities.
  • Computing science contexts for developing technological skills & knowledge e.g. logging onto computers, practise typing skills, close and save documents, using the smart board.
  • Food & textiles context for developing technological skills & knowledge e.g. handling, tasting, talking and learning about different foods and where they come from with a focus on healthy choices.
  • Craft, design, engineering & graphics contexts for developing technological skills & knowledge e.g. developing an interest, confidence and enjoyment in using drawing, cutting and colour techniques, manually or electronically, creating 3D models.

Literacy & English /
  • Listening & talking -Choose texts to look at and listen to, understand when it is appropriate to speak and when to listen, put information in a logical sequence, be able to convey a message clearly, know and understand that pace, gesture and expression can support effective oral communication.
  • Reading - Learn and use increasing phonic knowledge of 2 and 3 letter initial blends, silent letters etc, make informed choices between fiction and non- fiction and be able to give reasons for preferring particular texts and authors, increased use of punctuation and grammar e.g. question marks, nouns and verbs, answer and ask relevant questions about a text. Reciprocal Reading activities to deepen comprehension of texts.
  • Writing - Write for a variety of purposes in a manner that makes sense, spell commonly used words correctly and attempt unfamiliar words using known strategies, write neatly and legibly e.g. form letters correctly, use appropriate information relevant to the purpose, describe & share experiences, organise details logically.

Numeracy/
Mathematics /
  • Number, money & measure - Count, order, read, write numbers to 100, add and subtract numbers within 30, identify and use coins and notes to pay for items & work out the change, measure time e.g. months of the year and seasons, counting in 2s, 5s, 10’s,
  • Shape, position & movement - Finding the area of shapes, describe 2D and 3D shapes, positional & movement vocabulary e.g. left & right, under, over, identify common symmetrical patterns by folding or using a mirror.
  • Information Handling -Use everyday signs and charts to ask and answer questions about the information they contain, use simple bar charts, tally marks.
