June 5 ~ Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Both the Old Testament reading from 1 Kings and the Gospel speak of restoring to life the sons of widows - beautiful stories of compassion and God’s love. Consider what Saint Paul tells the Galatians in his letter: “… God, who … had set me apart was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him” Through baptism, each of us, has been set apart. The Son is revealed to each of us in His Word and Body and Blood at Mass, and in each other. We are called to proclaim Him too. Perhaps our story isn’t as dramatic as a loved one raised from the dead, but we all have a story of God’s compassion and love. Share your story. Introduce a friend to Jesus; help those whom you know and love get to know and love Him.
June 12 ~ Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint Paul’s letter to the Galatians continues this week with the beautiful phrase, “yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me;…. I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me.” What does this mean to us, here, today? If Christ lives in me, if I live by faith, I am patient, kind, merciful, forgiving, and prayerful – and more. But when we fall short, as we all do, remember that God loves each of us unconditionally, and waits for us in the sacrament of Reconciliation.
June 19 ~ Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“…when Jesus was praying by himself, and the disciples were with him, he asked them…., ‘But who do you say that I am?’” Peter responded, “The Christ of God.” How we answer this questions determines everything. To be a disciple means that we follow Jesus, conform our will to the will of the Father, keep connected through sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation and daily prayer. It means that we have the courage to tell His Story - share the Good News. It doesn’t have to be on a soapbox on a street corner. It can be at the soccer field or water cooler or over the back fence: Who do YOU say that He is?
June 26 ~ Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The second reading begins, “For freedom Christ set us free;” The word freedom or free is mentioned four times in just 146 words of this passage. Not a subtle message. God’s law frees us from the slavery of sin, and Jesus’ death and resurrection sets us free. What do we do with our freedom? Jesus says clearly, “Follow me;” Again, nothing subtle about this message. We, especially those who worship together each week, probably consider ourselves followers of Jesus. But are we disciples? A disciple is a person who prays daily, responds to the call to holiness that is directed to each of us, recognizes the need for Confession, has put Christ at the center of her/his life, serves the Church, and invites and helps others get to know Jesus better. If this seems like a long, demanding, list, start by picking one or two practices to focus on. Build your disciple muscles one step at a time.
“Empower” is Youth Ministry training at its best! It will be held on Saturday, September 10th, 2016 at St. Francis Parish, Medford Catholic Collaborative. The day will include training for small group facilitation, relational ministry, and middle school ministry; as well as activities for high school ministry, team planning, Mass, lunch and the best praise & worship music. The goal of the day is to help parishes lead teens closer to Jesus Christ! This event is sponsored by the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and Parish Support, and Life Teen. Registration opens May 1st with a discount for early registrations. All priests attend for free!
