FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOUSE OF PEACE RECEIVES SUPPORT

TO ASSIST CENTRAL CITY FAMILIES

House of Peace Receives Grant and Food Items from Miller Brewing Company Employees

Milwaukee, WI (November 13, 2006) -- House of Peace, a Capuchin ministry, will be the recipient of a holiday food drive hosted by Miller Brewing Company Milwaukee employees. Miller employees will be donating specific food items to be used in 2,000 holiday food baskets. The food baskets will be distributed by the House of Peace to needy central city households who otherwise would not have a holiday meal in their own home.

Miller’s employees are also financially supporting this food basket effort with a $17,500 donation from its Miller Brewing Company Employee Fund. Since its inception in 2001, this employee-driven fund has donated more than $1.4 million to organizations in southeastern Wisconsin for programs that focus on hunger, domestic violence and at-risk youth.

“This Miller employee effort is a huge undertaking,” Brother Mark Carrico, Executive Director of the House of Peace, explains. “We are profoundly grateful to Miller Brewing Company Employee Fund for helping us serve the poor this holiday season. The need is so great. We are overwhelmed by the employees’ generous hearts.”

Years ago, Capuchin Brother Booker Ashe and Father Matthew Gottschalk designed a House of Peace program that serves as a “hands-up” to recipients. An adult representative of each household that receives a holiday basket is required to attend a free class that will benefit them. They can choose from classes that focus on health, finance, employment and more.

Since 1968, the House of Peace has been serving Milwaukee’s central city. It provides food, clothing, and pastoral care to the poor plus houses a medical clinic and legal clinic that serves the same population. The House of Peace is a Capuchin ministry and is part of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph, which is headquartered in Detroit, and serves Capuchin ministries worldwide.
