FOODS AND NUTRITION II – FAMILY LIFE CYCLE LECTURE
OBJECTIVE:Identify the changing nutritional needs across the life cycle. / STANDARD:
Students will explore health concerns incorporating guidelines from MyPlate and current dietary guidelines throughout the life cycle.

CONTENT:
- Have the students answer the following question on their bell ringer cards, “At what family life cycle does malnutrition become a concern: Children, Adolescence, Adult or Elderly?” (Elderly)
- When done, have the students return their cards to the class basket.

TIME: 60 min.
CONTENT:
- Define family life cycles and identify the specific stages (slides 2-3)
- Discuss the basic nutritional needs for all family life cycles (slide 4)
- Discuss nutritional needs for children (slide 5)
- Discuss nutritional needs for adolescents (slide 6)
- Discuss nutritional needs for teen athletes (slides 7-9)
- Show the video, “Teen Nutrition. What’s the Big Debate?” Students are not required to take notes during the video. (slide 10)
- Discuss nutritional needs for adults (slide 11)
- Discuss nutritional needs for the elderly (slide 12-13)
- Instruct the students of the next three cooking labs we will be having (slide 15)
PROCESS QUESTIONS:
- Define family life cycles.
- What are the stages in the family life cycles?
- Name some nutritional needs for children.
- Name some nutritional needs for adolescents.
- Name some nutritional needs for teen athletes.
- Name nutritional needs for adults.

Nutritional needs vary throughout our life cycle. Make sure those needs are being met!
STUDENT EVALUATION:
Instruct the students to fill out the study guide throughout the lecture today. Encourage discussion and answer any questions the students may have throughout the lesson. At the end of class, have the students keep their study guides to prepare for the upcoming test. There will be no homework today.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY:
Split the class into two groups. Have a competitive game in which the teacher asks different questions in regards to concepts discussed throughout the lecture. Award the team with the correct answer a point. The team with the most points at the end of class wins the game and receives a small prize.
