Food and Beverage Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority (FoodBev SETA) invites Masters and PhD students to apply for research grants.

The Food and Beverages Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority, often referred to as the FoodBev SETA, is a vehicle that facilitates skills development for the sector as promulgated in the Skills Development Act of 98 as amended. The skills policy is further articulated in the Skills Development Strategy (NSDS), now in its third iteration for the period 2011/12-2017/18, referred to as ‘NSDS III”. The NSDS III is the overarching strategic guide for the skills development while providing direction to sector skills planning and implementation for the SETAs. South Africa in general has suffered a shortage of sectoral research and development and innovation capacity to better inform skills planning and implementation (Department of Higher Education and Training, 2011). Outcome 4.2.4 (Relevant research and development and innovation capacity is developed and innovative research projects established) of the NSDS III clearly defines activities that need to be executed by SETAs to achieve this NSDS III outcome.

The FoodBev SETA has developed the Postgraduate Research Bursary Programme in response to the research and development needs of the food and beverages manufacturing sector. Research and development will contribute to the body of knowledge and add on the sectoral research innovation capacity. In addition, the programme will also contribute towards the skills needed (researchers) to produce research that is relevant and have a positive impact on the sector, at the same time assist the FoodBev SETA in advancing its research agenda. Therefore, students with approved research proposals and with research topics relevant and responsive to food and beverages manufacturing sector are encouraged to apply for this research grant.
