Dear Parents,

Following is an outline of the grading and homework policy in 6th Grade Language Arts.

There are 4 weighted categories of grades:

·  Homework; includes both the Readers Response Journal and Writers Notebook entries. These will be assessed on a point system. Students will receive point values of 6-10 for completed homework depending on the quality/correctness of the assignment. If it is turned in late, they will receive half credit (5 points). Late work will be accepted on the Monday following the week in which the assignment was missing. If it is not turned in by Monday, the homework grade will be a “0”. One of the goals this year is to have students develop the discipline of daily reading and writing. Homework will count as 20% of the student’s grade.

·  In Class Assessments and Quizzes; includes both spelling and vocabulary activities and assessments, as well as reading strategy quizzes. These are a percentage grade. This is 25% of the student’s grade.

·  Tests, Publications and Projects: These are formal assessments and students will receive a percentage grade. This is 40% of the student’s grade.

·  In Class Participation and Preparation; These are weekly grades reflecting the student’s participation in class, as well as their preparation. These will also be on the point system. This is 15% of the student’s grade.

Each homework will be recorded separately so the student can see his/her progress and missing assignments.

A Homework Note:

Due to the structure of Readers and Writers Workshop, when a student has been absent it is difficult to reteach an entire lesson and give the student time to practice so they can complete the missed homework. Students returning from an absence will be given any notes associated with the lesson missed and any additional instruction from the teacher. However, instead of the assigned homework the student missed, we are asking that the student complete a Reading Response for each day missed. Students are familiar with the assignment and it can be done while the student is home sick, since their independent reading book and Readers Response Journal should be going home with them every night.
