Following a graduate study of applied mathematics at the University of Warsaw, Poland, in 1988 Tomasz J. Kozubowski (TJK) received MS in Statistics from the University of Texas, El Paso, and then obtained a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Statistics and Applied Probability from University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1992. Currently, he is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno.

TJK works in the general area of probability and statistics, and particularly stochastic modeling of natural phenomena in variety of fields, including climate research, geosciences, finance, and economics. His research interests include distribution theory, Laplace distribution and its generalizations, limit theory for random sums, heavy tailed distributions, extremes, mathematical statistics, financial and insurance mathematics, stochastic models for hydro-climatic phenomena, and fractal scaling processes. He enjoys both theoretical as well as interdisciplinary collaborative research. Over the years, he has co-authored two monographs and over 90 research papers in collaboration with researchers around the world and under funding from the NSF. This work has led to significant advances in these areas, many graduate theses, and numerous international invitations and presentations.

TJK is currently an editorial board member of Open Statistics and Probability Journal and associate editor for Communications in Statistics: Theory and Methods, Communications in Statistics: Simulation and Computation, and specialty section Mathematical Finance of Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. He is also an active reviewer, having refereed for over 80 academic journals, and a former editorial board member of Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods and associate editor for Journal of Probability and Statistics. With the 2016 Sentinel of Science Reward, he was recognized by Publonsas one of the top researchers contributing to the peer review in the field of mathematics.
