Addressing Drug Overdose Deaths in Maine /
  • Focus on High Risk Population
  • Have had many successes, more still needs to be done overdose deaths still on the rise in ME
  • Critical for this work to happen within the community starting with the FD, EMS, Police, Hospitals all communicating and understanding what the tx options are within their community
  • Need for Rapid low barrier treatment within our communities, need to increase where and how these tx options exist
  • Current options and tx are not consistent across the state
  • 14 states showed a decrease in 2016, we need to learn what they are doing to decrease overdose deaths within their states to figure out if any of these programs can be implemented within our state
  • Examples
  • Mass General “Bridge Clinic
  • RI “Levels of Care
  • ME MidCoast ED providing rapid access
  • There has not been enough data collection in the state or US to have a full understanding on the high-risk areas
  • There is not enough quick rapid access to treatment MAT/MAR, naloxone. We need to understand who is doing what, what services are available within a community and what are the barriers for pt’s within that community, how do we overcome these barriers
  • Stigma/bias around these cases needs to change
  • Project Lazarus out of California, Decreased overdose deaths in 3 yrs by 73%
  • App developed by HIDTA which is an overdose map, smartphone access for police, EMS
  • Recovery in the community needs to be strengthened in ME
  • Nalaxone is not being used and available in ME as widely as it should be to prevent overdose deaths
/
  • All - Will be thinking about how to get out into communities

Future Caring for ME Efforts /
  • We would like to be responsive around what you all feel we should be working on, are there specific issues this group feels that we should be addressing
  • Lisa L – Giant issue around perinatal addiction/prevention/assistance
  • Ron Watson – Lack of coordinated groups like this, how do we create that communication within the communities? Lisa L – would love this group to become ambassadors of this work, looking for ideas from this group on how do we do that. Ron – Create an ambassador group out of this group

I was going to skip over sharing this today but I have been speaking with a police department in West Virginia that has a pretty interesting program to address risk factors in childhood:

York Hospital started a community-based "Opioid Roundtable" that meets quarterly. The group includes members from law enforcement, EMS, medical staff, school counselors, adult education, community service organizations, behavioral health, people in recovery, community health coalitions, faith community and other local groups interested in addressing the opioid problem, together. Very 'grass-roots' and successful. Feel free to contact me with questions: or (207)351-3430
