Flour Baby Alternative Project

  • You must still complete both crisises – researching them completely.
  • Interview a new mom (of a child under 1 year old). Find out how her lifestyle changed since having her child. What were some of the emotional adjustments she needed to make? How did her relationships – with her spouse, friends & work – change? What new responsibilities does she now have? What is the most rewarding thing(s) about being a mom? The most frustrating thing(s)? Have her sign your paper.

Baby Crisises

10.Your six-month-old child hasn’t begun to sit up yet. He follows movement with his eyes but doesn’t often try to reach out and grab an object. Usually he misses it when he tries anyway. He makes gurgling sounds but hasn’t yet tried to copy any sounds he has heard. He seems to be very lethargic (tired, low energy).

  1. You are going over to the counter to pour your second cup of morning coffee. As you are turning around with the pot in your hand, your child comes running into the room, laughing, and grabs you around the leg. You catch yourself before you actually trip and fall but you spill half of the pot of hot coffee down his/her neck and back.

9.Your 20-month-old is very quiet. She rarely makes any noises and never seems to want to try to imitate words. Her attention span seems very short (even for her age) and you often feel like she isn’t listening to you at all. You’ve noticed that she doesn’t seem to enjoy the CDs that you often play for her. Yesterday, the cat knocked over one of your living room lamps. It landed with a loud thump right behind your little girl and broke into three pieces. You noticed that she didn’t even flinch - she just kept playing with her blocks.

  1. You are vacuuming in the dining room while your child is playing in the living room. He always seems to like to imitate anything you do. You notice s/he has their push toy out and is pretending to vacuum the living room floor. When you are finished, you unplug the vacuum and go to put it away when you hear an awful scream. You run into the living room and find your child with his/her finger still in the socket, crying.
  1. You have been painting the house and you have left some brushes soaking in turpentine in the sink in the basement. Because you are doing the laundry and using the sink you set the soaking brushes on the floor. Your little boy is playing around outside the door. He comes into the laundry room to see what you are doing and drops one of his toys into the bucket of brushes. There is a big splash and he starts to cry. You look at his face and notice that he has red splotches all over his face and he is rubbing his eyes.
  1. Your little boy was playing with his older brother. The ball they were using rolls out into the street. They know better than to run out after it but…your little boy got so excited about the ball that he followed it into the road. All you remember hearing is a horn, loud squeaking brakes and a soft thud! By the time you reach him, he is lying on his back, unconscious and not moving, in the middle of the street.

17.You are just coming out of the bathroom, you had left your child in the living room playing and watching Sesame Street, when you notice she seems to be having difficulty breathing and looks slightly blue. You ask her to say something but she can’t. You see a half-finished puzzle on the floor and notice that it has a lot of small pieces.

  1. You are finding it more and more difficult to leave you child with a babysitter. She is two and a half and just doesn’t want you to leave. She screams and cries when you even get near the closet that holds your coat. She runs to you and hangs onto your leg and begs you not to leave. You don’t leave her very often but you just got a part-time job (only 2 mornings a week) and you need her to be able to stay with the babysitter.

14.Your child has been playing in the leaves outside - jumping in and out of the piles you have just finished raking up. Suddenly, he runs into the house crying and holding his eye. You see a big scratch mark underneath and his left eye looks very bloodshot. He keeps blinking and crying and has a hard time keeping his eye open.

  1. You and your child are taking a walk. A strange dog runs by, without a leash or an owner, and your son laughs, pulls away from you and runs after the dog. The dog stops, turns around and wags its tail. Your son bends down to pet it on the nose and the dog growls and bites him hard and deep on the arm.
  1. Your kids are running out to the car. They are trying to be helpful by assisting you with putting things in the front passenger seat. When you are all finished, you tell the older one to shut the door. As you turn to open the back door so they can climb in the back seat, you hear the car door slam shut and your toddler (the younger one) starts screaming and crying. His older brother is sobbing, repeating over and over, “I didn’t mean to, Mommy, I didn’t mean to!!”

6.You have just begun to feed your child sandwiches for lunch. His favorite is ham and cheese but you decide to give him peanut butter and jelly for a change. After lunch you notice what looks like hives developing on his face and his mouth seems to be itchy. To make things worse, he seems to be having a little difficulty breathing. A short bit later you notice a rash spreading over his body. You seem to remember something similar happening last Halloween after he had eaten quite a few candy bars.

  1. You are at your mother’s house with your 13-month-old baby. While you are talking in the kitchen, you realize your child is not there. You find him slumped in the bathroom holding a bottle of sleeping pills that only has two pills left in the container.
  1. You wake up around 1:30 am to hear your child coughing violently. You go into the room and find her short of breath, crying and wheezing. She didn’t seem to have much, if any, cough when she went to bed. Her cough seems to rattle very deeply and be very dry or unproductive (doesn’t bring any phlegm up with it). She can’t seem to stop coughing and she is now having a hard time catching her breath. The cough is very loud and is followed by a sharp, high-pitched intake of air.
  1. You are shopping at Pathmark and your one and a half year old daughter is seated in the front of your cart. You forget something in the beginning of the aisle right next to you (one aisle over) so you run back to get it. When you return, your child is not in the cart and is not responding to your frantic calls.
  1. You are getting ready to feed your baby dinner. All day you have noticed that she seems uncharacteristically quiet and a bit listless (no energy). You have thought that she has felt a little warm on and off throughout the day but nothing too drastic. She seems to be quite fussy and doesn’t really seem hungry at all. You put her in her swing so your can finish making dinner but she keeps crying and crying. When you finally pick her up, about 15 minutes later, she seems like she is burning up. You take her temperature and it is over 104 degrees!
  1. You took your little girl with you to the playground. She was sliding down the slide and then you were pushing her on the swings. She was having a great time. She decided that she wanted to climb on the horse “that rocks” so she ran over to hop onto it. At the same time, another little boy ran by and they collide. She falls and hits her head on the edge of the slide. You run over to see blood steaming down her face.
  1. Your baby is three months old now and he cries continually. He cries when he is hungry, he cries when you feed him, he cries when you put him down – he cries ALL OF THE TIME! He moves around in his crib constantly when you put him down to sleep – almost like he can’t seem to find a position that feels comfortable to him. The only time he seems to drift off to sleep is when he is sitting up in his little swing and it is gently rocking him back and forth. You are exhausted and feel like you can’t take it anymore. You are wondering whether there is something wrong with him – or you!

15.Your son (9 years old) and his uncle are wrestling around on the floor. Your brother (his uncle) keeps tickling him and pushing him back down. Your little boy finally breaks away and runs out towards the kitchen. He slips and falls and, on the way down, he cracks his mouth on the edge of the chair. You find him holding his mouth, which is bleeding profusely from the inside, crying hysterically. As you bend down to pick him up, you notice that there is a tooth lying on the floor in a puddle of blood.

  1. Your child has his hand on your glass of iced tea that is on the table. You start to tell him not to touch your glass but before you can get the words out of your mouth, he accidentally bumps the glass over and it rolls off the table. He thinks you are going to be really mad so he tries to pick it up really fast. Before you can get to him, he grabs a large piece of the glass off of the floor and now has a deep gash in his hand that is spurting blood.

21.Your daughter is running around your living room and trips. She hits her head hard on the coffee table and lands in a heap on the floor. She lies there limp for about 30 seconds to a minute before she starts to move around again. A huge lump pops out quickly on her head and she seems groggy or a bit out of it.
