FLORA-BAMA’S MULLET TOSS AIDS LOCAL YOUTH GROUPS

Perdido Key, FL/AL- For the last 31 of its 50 years, the Flora-Bama has been flinging fish across the state line at its annual Mullet Toss. The vastly popular event, recently extendedfor three days, fills local condos and hotels to their max during which was one of slowerweeks of the year for both states. Besides having an economic impact of over $6 million,annually, to Florida's local economy alone, the iconic beach bar makes it a point to givesomething back to the communities that has fostered its growth for so many years!

This year, with over 1,250 fish 'flung' some $5,000 will go back to area youth programs!Some $2,000 will be split between the AL/FL Boys' and Girls' Clubs serving the needs ofyouth in disadvantaged circumstances, of all backgrounds, to develop the qualitiesneeded to become responsible citizens and leaders.

An additional $3,000+ will be split between: Escambia County's Community Drug &Alcohol Council, Inc. (CDAC) offering holistic programs to engage the entire communityin addressing substance and mental health issues both in the home and on the street; and,Baldwin County's Youth-Reach Gulf Coast, a long-term program intended to help healwounds and restore families by developing self-control, character and responsibility in"today's damaged and discarded youth".

Events sponsored by Flora-Bama earlier thatweek, the "M. Lane Gilchrist Mullet-ManTriathlon" and "Mullet Swing" at Lost Key Golf Course raised over $3,000 for theLeukemia-Lymphoma Assoc. along with the Multiple SclerosisSociety. Volunteers helpingpark vehicles and in cleanup raised over $10,000 for their chosen youth group includingthe Perdido Bay Youth Sports Assoc., Escambia High School Booster and Soccer Clubs,as well as, the West Florida High School Band Booster Club.

The Flora-Bama would like to express its sincere thanks for all those who participatedand, in particular, the Law and Life Safety personnel in making this one of the grandest,incident free events ever! In return the, iconic roadhouse and honky-tonk takes pride inhelping the economic recovery for the area that has nurtured its growth for the last 50+years while affording it the opportunity to help sustain our most precious natural resource,our Youth!
