Floor Hockey Study Guide

Game Objective: The object of the game is to hit the puck into the goal of the opponent.

History: About 2500 years ago, the early Greeks, and other ancient nations played a game very similar to our present-day hockey. Some centuries later the game was being played in France and was called "hoquet." Then the English began to play the game under the name "hokay."

Equipment:

·  Hockey Stick.

·  Puck

·  Goals

·  Mouth Piece

·  Goggles (Eye protection)

Floor Hockey Rules:

  1. The game starts with a face off, when the sticks are tapped 3 times and the puck is hit.
  1. A face off is required after each goal.
  1. The puck may be cleared by the use of the goalies stick or by sliding the puck across the floor.
  1. No player may lift his/her stick above their waist on the backs swings or the follow through!!! If this occurs the player will have to sit out for the remainder of the game.
  1. No player may leave his or her feet for the purpose of sliding during the game. If this occurs serious injury may take place.
  1. Two hands must remain on the hockey stick at all times.

Player Positions:

  1. Goalie-Stops the puck with their hands, or stick. The goalie defends his/her goal.
  1. Center-The only player who is able to move full court. He/she leads all play.
  1. Defenders-The players who assist their goalie in keeping the puck out of their opponents' front court. These players may not cross the center line and move into their front court.
  1. Forwards-These players attempt to move the puck towards their own goal. They much stay out of the defensive end of the court.

Fouls: Any of the fouls committed below will result in a penalty shot or being removed from the game.

  1. High Sticking-Swinging the stick above the waist at any time during play.
  1. Slashing-When a player hits another player with his/her stick away from the puck.
  1. Hooking-Using the stick to hold back your opponent.
  1. Cross-Checking (Pushing)-Using your stick or hands to push another player.
  1. Tripping-Interfering with another players feet/legs with use of the hockey stick or ones own feet.

Vocabulary Associated with Floor Hockey:

1. Assist – a pass from a teammate that leads to a goal.

2. Blade – the curved end of the stick, front and back, used to hit the puck.

3. Body or Shaft – the main part of the stick, used to hold and stickhandle.

4. Butt or End – the end knob used for better grip, to keep the hand from sliding off the stick.

5. Centering the puck – to pass to a spot (the point) in front of the opponents goal.

6. Goalie Crease – the area where no player’s feet or stick, except for the goalie, is allowed during play. (This area is designated by the teacher.)

7. Hat Trick – when one player scores 3 goals in one game.

9. Face-Off – starts play by either an official dropping of the puck or by students tapping sticks 3 times and then beginning play.

10. Give and Go – used to allow the offensive team to work together to beat the defense. An easy controllable pass is given to a teammate; they receive it and pass it back to their teammate, out in front and on an angle.

11. Off – Sides – having a defensive player in the offensive zone and/or an offensive player in the defensive zone.

12. Power Play – a one man advantage due to a foul (i.e. high sticking) deemed by the teacher. The player leaves the floor for a specific time and may not reenter until notified.

13. Slap Shot – a fast shot made with a short powerful swing of a hockey stick.

15. Wrist Shot – quick snap of the wrist, used for quickness and accuracy. The puck should stay in contact with the blade of the stick throughout the execution. There should not be a back swing and you shouldn’t hear the ball make contact with the stick. Used as a pass or a shot

on goal.
