Experience

April 2011-Royal Solent Yacht Club, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.
Sailing instructor (Voluntary)
  • Ensuring all safety measures were put in place for all scouts sailing.
  • Teaching the scouts, the basics of sailing, wind and the tides.
  • Making sure they were brought to shore safely and correctly.

I was a very keen sailor of Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth and enjoyed the week of teaching young children from a local scout group on the Isle of Wight. I learnt how to interact with people whilst under racing conditions and was pleased with the outcome of their behavior and knowledge of sailing. I enjoyed every minute of it.

October 2012 - December 2016 - Dunelm Soft Furnishings, Newport, Isle of Wight
Customer Service Assistant
  • Assisting customers in aid of help
  • Selling the relevant product to the customer
  • Stocking shelves, replenishment and stock take of products warehouse

I joined Dunelm in 2012 with little knowledge of sales and retail, however over the years Iearnt and adapted how to work with customers on different departments of the store such as bedding and bathroom. I have learnt how important product knowledge was and used this skill to sell the company’s product in the best possible way. Working at Dumeln through those years has really helped my confidence and customer service skills.

January 2017- to date - SolentWightline Cruises Ltd, Cowes, Isle of Wight
Apprentice Deckhand
  • On/off loading passengers
  • Keeping a Watch (navigation)
  • Mooring/unmooring (rope work)
  • Safety of passengers onboard
  • Assist with engine maintenance

I joined SolentWightline Cruises in 2017 to gain sea time and maritime experience. I have gained many skills throughout my time on small passenger charter boats such as essential rope work and working with experienced crew competently. I have also learnt in detail about wind, tide, Buoys and flags (COLREGS). Over all this is the best job I have had to date and thoroughly enjoy what I do and being on the water and would like to progress my role in the Maritime service.

Qualities, skills and abilities

I have learnt skills through my experience in retail and being a Deckhand, for instance handling money and strong customer service skills, talking and engaging with customers. I have written and verbal communication skills built up through presentations and coursework I have done at the Isle of Wight College through Public Services course and through my training at Red Ensign. I have also adapted IT skills through school and I have proved that I have the ability to work well under pressure due to my current role with SolentWightline Cruises.

I am a well-coordinated person, with a determined and positive attitude to everything I do. I am well organized and like to think I work well as a good communicator. I am an enthusiastic and hardworking team leader and member. By being enthusiastic and hardworking team member I can take on responsibility, I have shown this through my work at sea and also participating in adventurous activities in the Public Services course. I have adapted all these types of skills into the career I would like to pursue which is working as officer of the watch in the Merchant Navy Sector.

Interests

I have many interests, I have been a keen member at Royal Solent Yacht Club for several years, now an ex member I still have a very high interest in sailing and being on the water. I sail onboard a wooden keel boat with two of my friends, sometimes just for cruising but mainly competing in races which are held within the sailing season. I like to keep myself fit, I sometimes go to the gym, cycle or run when I can. I like to meet different people from different cultures and the general idea of exploring new places excites me. I have a passion for cruises and cruise ships, in 2008 I experienced my first cruise with my family and enjoyed every moment of it.
