If the e-business website is also expected to support wireless and voice access, it’ll become even more complicated.
(6)As a leading giant of global e-business, IBM takes the necessary steps to address its customers' requirements for global e-business.
(7)Following the IBM e-business patterns, (??? the)the Globalization Certification Laboratory in IBM Shanghai has finished quite a few globalized e-business websites. The pilot case we finished recently, Our Global Bank Demo, is a globalized e-business application providing services in 12 languages and supporting three access devices ()--PC, WAP phone, and voice over telephone.
(8)Now let’s take a look at the globalization features of Our Global Bank Demo and the products and technology adopted in this demo.

(9)Our Global Bank Demo is provided with many globalization features.
(10)It serves the customers in 12 languages.
(11)In the registration page, the name, address, telephone format and honorifics conform to the user’s native convention.
(12)The sorting of country and city names is in the dictionary order of the corresponding language.
(13)Furthermore, with change of the country in the address section, the address and telephone number format changes correspondingly. For example, the sequence to write a Chinese address is Country, Province, City, and Street; while in the United States it is reversed.
(14)When a user logs on to Our Global Bank Demo, we greets him with his native honorific.
(15)Throughout the banking services, the currency format, number format, and percentage format conform to the user’s native convention. We also adopted the user’s native rounding rules to round up decimal numbers when necessary.
(16)The customers of Our Global Bank Demo may come from different time zone. When a customer queries his transaction history, the transaction time is displayed to him in his local time.
(17)In the transaction history query function, we provide a calendar for the user to input the start date and end date of the period. The layout of the calendar meets the customers cultural expectation. For example, the first day of week in the United States is Sunday, while in some European countries it is Monday. When the date is input through the calendar, it is displayed in a format conforming to the user’s native convention. When the transaction history is displayed, the time is also displayed in user’s preferred format.
(18)Apart from the globalization feature one can experience while visiting Our Global Bank Demo via PC and WAP phone, customers of voice access can enjoy the globalization feature of transliteration and message format as well.

<Section Three: tech and products
(26)Being a website with various globalization features, Our Global Bank Demo also supports pervasive computing – it can be accessed via browsers, WAP phone, and voice over telephone. The soul of its architecture is to convvert the XML generated in the application server to WML and Voice XML with style sheet so as to support WAP phone and voice access. In a recent Forrester report, The Best of Europe’s eCommerce, they assert, “Localization is indispensable for attracting large numbers of customers. Even customers who speak English prefer sites that offer their local language as well as local product selections, relevant payment options, and localized versions of customer service.”
Early adopters, those companies that see the global picture and have altered their business strategy to address international issues, are seeing the payoff from localization:

However, mere localization will not make you elite of the industry. A merely localized web site architecture greatly increases the complexity of your e-business and multiplies the cost of providing online services.
Then how to make the end-user interactions appear customized to each user's cultural expectations, but still have the system be simple as possible to build, design, deploy and maintain? Becoming globalized is the answer.
Globalized web sites use single executable program that devoid of all cultural information. The program dynamically retrieves cultural localization information from the cultural information repositories, which we call localization packs. Therefore, the combination of a globalized program and an instance of localization pack data and services provide the appropriate cultural behavior, yet the cost to develop and maintain a multilingual e-business web site is visibly decreased.

<Section Two: Function and Products>
<2.1 Brief Introduction to GBank>
Our Global Bank Demo is a virtual bank providing online banking services. To better serve the customers, this online bank allows their customers to access the banking services via PC, mobile phones, and telephone systems. As a multinational bank, Our Global Bank Demo also provides services in 12 languages to meet the cultural expectation of customers from different country/regions.
<2.2 Banking Scenario>
Fred, an American businessman in his thirties, is one of Global Bank’s customers. In the morning he gets connected to Global bank via Internet and views his accounts information from his desktop.
He has three accounts in Global Bank. Two are Interest Checking account, and the other is Non-Interesting Checking account. From the Account Summary, he gets the brief information of all three of his accounts.
8am, Fred sets off to work. On his way to the company, Fred remembers that his salary has just been deposited to his non-interest checking account yesterday. To earn interest, he connects to Global Bank with his mobile phone to transfer some funds from the non-interest checking account to an interest checking account.
After logged on to Global Bank, Fred first chooses “check balance” from the main menu. He then selects the non-interest checking account to check the available balance of that account. The balance is thirteen thousand five hundred and sixty-six
point three five US dollars. Fred decides to transfer eight thousand US dollars to his interest checking US dollar account.
Fred returns to the main menu and selects “Transfer funds” from the main menu. He selected the non-interest checking account as the source account, and the US dollar interest checking account as the target account. He inputted “8000” in the field “amount to transfer”. Fred confirms the transfer and the transaction are made.
Fred is now at his office. At noon a famous Jewelry store, Helen’s Favorites, calls him and asks him to comfirmconfirm whether he are to buy the necklace he ordered a week ago. That necklace is the birthday gift Fred buys for his wife Barbara. Fred confirms the order and is now to pay to bill for that necklace. Helen’s Favorites is also a client of Global Bank and has a payee account, 1011101110111011 in Global Bank. That gives Fred much convenience. He picks up the phone and dials to Global Bank to pay the bill.
(The transaction process via telephone)
When Fred gets back home in the evening, he logs on to Global Bank again. He queries the transaction history of the day. Every transaction is clearly presented to him. The account summary also shows him the current balance of all his accounts. “Honey”, Barbara says, “I’m going to Paris on a business trip next Monday. Could you tell me how much Euros I can exchange with 1200 US dollars?” “No problem, sweetie,” Fred smiles, and begins to calculate the exchange rate.

(27)IBM Everyplace Wireless Gateway, which provides conversion between WAP and HTTP, so as to enable the customers to visit Our Global Bank Demo with a WAP phone. IBM Everyplace Wireless Gateway also provides conversion between WTLS and SSL, which ensures the security of the transaction.
(28)To support voice access, we choose IBM Voice Server 2.0 to parse and execute Voice XML. Voice XML is an industry standard, which makes the communication between human and telephone more convenient. IBM Voice Server is also known as “Voice Gateway”, which connects text and voice. It converts Voice XML to human voice and human voice to backend request.
(29)IBM Edge Server provides the function of load balance, caching proxy, and content distribution. In Our Global Bank Demo, we used the reverse proxy function of the caching proxy.
(30)IBM Transcoding Publisher, also known as “Magic Server”, can convert XML and HTML to WML and Voice XML to support wireless device and voice access.
(31)In Our Global Bank Demo, we use Transcoding Publisher to convert the XML generated in application server to WML and Voice XML to support the access from WAP phone and telephone. This ensures the device-independence of the e-business website; that is, no extra coding work in backend server is needed upon support of a new device.
(32)IBM WebSphere Portal is based on WebSphere Application Server 4.0 Advanced Edition. It supports pervasive devices, user customization, and enables single sign-on. In Our Global Bank Demo, portlets can communicate with each other. When you transfer fund from one account to another in the “Transfer Funds” portlet, you can see the balance of those accounts changes dynamically in the “Account Summary” portlet.
(33)In Our Global Bank Demo, we upgraded WebSphere Application Server 4.0 Advanced Edition, on which WebSphere Portal is based, to Enterprise Edition. The Enterprise Edition provides a function named “Internationalization Service”. With this function, developer of globalized e-business website need no longer to care about the locale and time zone difference between the server side and the client side, which greatly simplified the development.
(34)WebSphere Translation Server can translate the entire website from English to multiple languages and from some of those languages back to English. The translation performance can also be improved by adding user defined dictionary.
(35)Moreover, we use IBM SecureWay Directory to manage the customer profile, and DB2 to store the critical banking data.

(37)As a globalized e-business website, the architecture of Our Global Bank Demo is also a globalized one. It uses a single executable program that is devoid of all cultural information which dynamically retrieves cultural localization information from the cultural information repositories.
(38)Thus, the source code and the cultural information are separated from each other. If a new language is to be supported, we just add a new cultural information repository; and neitherno development ()nor test work()are needed.
