Assignments for Independent Study

Reinforcement of material from last week

  • Step 1: Can you still comfortably discuss the weather? Are you still comfortable asking or questions in Turkish?
  • Step 2: Are you still actively using comparatives and superlatives? Do you remember how to form the future tense, both affirmative and negative?
  • Step 3: Do you remember how to buy a bus ticket? How would you ask directions from the nearest bus stop to Aya Sofya?

How to Exchange Money

  • Step 1: Listen to, perform aloud, and memorize the dialogue and supplementary vocabulary in ET, Unit 17, Section 6: Döviz bozdurmak istiyorum.
  • Step 2: Read about money exchange in the cultural note in ET, Unit 17, Section 6, and complete the subsequent Substitution Drills and Exercise. Answer the ‘class conversation’ questions aloud.
  • Make it real! Look up the current exchange rate between the dollar and the Turkish lira. Practice the new dövizbürosu dialogue you have just learned in the mirror.
  • Step 3: Complete VBE 3.0 Money and Post
  • Step 4:Watch the LangMedia, Turkish in Turkey, Shopping and Services videos in the section:
  • Money Exchange

These are authentic recordings, and contain unfamiliar grammar and vocabulary. Practice making educated guesses about meaning, and extrapolating from words you do recognize. Memorize useful new vocabulary phrases, and make note of questions for your tutorial.

FOR TUTORIAL: Write a new dialogue similar to the one in Unit 17, Section 6. This dialogue should each be at least 15 lines long.

The Adverbial Suffix -(y)IncA

  • Step 1: Perform aloud, and memorize the short dialogue, Yazın ne yapacaksın? at the end of Unit 17, Section 6. Notice the italicized ending.
  • Step 2: Study the usage of the adverbial suffix -IncA in ET, Unit 17, Section 7, and complete translation exercises A-C.
  • Try it! Talk to yourself about your weekend plans using –(y)IncA.
  • Be sure to learn how to use –(y)IncA in the dative case with kadar.
  • Step 3: Complete exercises F-I in ET, Unit 17, Section 12.

FOR TUTORIAL: Following the model of the sentences in the box “Gelecek Icin Planlarim,” write out the ends of the seven sentences under Class activity: Group work in Unit 17, Section 7.

FOR TUTORIAL: A child wants to stay up long past his/her bedtime. Using –(y)IncAyA kadar at least 7 times, write a dialogue in which s/he repeatedly wheedles to be allowed to stay up “just a little bit longer, until…” This dialogue should be at least 15 lines long.

Strengthening Reading Comprehension

  • Step 1: Read the paragraph in Unit 17, Section 8.

FOR TUTORIAL: Write out answers to the reading comprehension questions in ET, Unit 17, Section 8.

Exceptions to Vowel Harmony Rules

  • Step 1: Study the exceptions to vowel harmony rules in ET, Unit 17, Section 9, speaking each word aloud. Memorize the words listed.

Using Question Words

  • Step 1: Read through Unit 17, Section 10: Word Focus: Question Words: Review. Read all the Turkish examples aloud.
  • Practice using question word (new or review) in a sentence!
  • Step 2: Study the three ways to ask ‘why’ in Turkish.
  • Step 3: Complete Exercises A-C in Unit 17, Section 10.

Using -mAk için

  • Step 1: Read through Unit 17, Section 11, and memorize how to use the construction -mAk için. Be sure to read all Turkish examples aloud.
  • Step 2: Complete exercises A-C in ET, Unit 17, Section 11.

FOR TUTORIAL: Write a short paragraph describing your favorite vacation spot, your reasons for choosing the place, the weather, and the things you go there in order to do. This paragraph should be at least 12 sentences long, and use –mAk için at least 8 times.

Vocabulary note:

  • In addition to the vocabulary from the sections covered by this week’s Study Guide, you should finish mastering the vocabulary listed at the end of Unit 17.
  • Remember, for all new vocabulary ALWAYS:
  • Make Flashcards and review the vocabulary repeatedly.
  • Make sure you can translate the words from English to Turkish and vice versa.
  • Practice using vocabulary in phrases.
  • Practice using each word in a sentence.
  • Complete dictation exercise 26 on the Turkish Dictation Exercises website. Listen to the dictation once in its entirety. The second time you listen, write down what you hear. The third time, check what you have written. Check your own work. Be prepared to write out a dictation based on these exercises at your tutorial.

Conversation Session Preparation Guide

  • Be prepared to role play exchanging money in Turkey. You may have to read a currency exchange chart like the one in Unit 17, Section 6, ask about changes in currency price, or locate an exchange bureau.
  • Be prepared to actively use and understand the suffix -(y)IncA. You may be asked to describe future plans using -(y)IncA, as in the box, Gelecek için planlarım in Unit 17, Section 7.
  • Be prepared to discuss/identify exceptions to vowel harmony rules.
  • Be prepared to participate in an ‘interview’ game as part of your review of question words.
  • Be prepared to ask and answer questions about motivations and purpose using -makiçin.
  • Be prepared to answer reading comprehension questions in ET, Unit 17, Section 8. You may be asked to read the passage aloud.
  • Be prepared to discuss with a classmate your favorite book, author, etc. in ET, Unit 17, Section 11.
