Press Release
Second National Monotype/Monprint exhibitions opens at the fitchburg art museum
The Fitchburg Art Museum celebrates the art of the unique print by hosting the Monotype Guild of New England’s Second National Monotype/Monoprint juried exhibition from Sunday September 26 - January 2, 2011. The Juror, Dr. Joann Moser, Senior Curator of Graphic Arts at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, selected 111 pieces from more than the 900 submitted, by 313 artists from 36 States.
Dr. Moser was fascinated by the wide variety of works submitted. Many pieces were created in combination with other printmaking techniques, and some included other elements such as collage or sewing thread. She found that “some were so complex it was difficult to determine which parts of the image were printed by monotype.” However, in the end “it was the power of the image, not the technique or materials, that determined which works I selected for the exhibition”.
Being a juror for this exhibition, Dr. Moser found it a very satisfying experience and afforded her the opportunity to become familiar with new artists, as well as seeing the latest work by known artists. Having written extensively on the subject, Dr. Moser was delighted to see that “the monotype/monoprint process continues to entice artists with its possibilities, just as it continues to appeal to a broad and diverse audience”.
The exhibition opens with a reception on Sunday September 26 from 1– 3 p.m. As part of the celebrations, the Museum will host a steamroller printmaking activity. Visitors are invited to make individual and group prints and watch them printed with a real steamroller in the Museum’s parking lot. In addition, exhibiting artist Tamar Etingen will be demonstrating monoprinting techniques.
