First United Methodist Church Maiden NC August 2017
Christmas Cards for the Troops
August 13th is the deadline for the Christmas cards to be signed and returned to the church. We want to get them in the mail so that our soldiers stationed overseas will have a card “from home” this Christmas. Please take a few minutes and grab a pack of “10” cards that you can write a note of gratitude and a well wish for the season. Then return them to the church where you picked them up from. The rest will be up to us.
With Deepest Sympathy
The church family extends its deepest sympathy to the Annie Caldwell family who passed away in July. Annie will always be remembered as the “lunch room lady” for those who knew her some fifty years ago.
Back to School Supplies for Maiden Elementary School
Monetary donations to the “Go Ye” fund for July and August are going to be given to Maiden Elementary School to be used as they see a need.
We are also collecting much needed school supplies. An insert in the bulletin will give you some guidance on what those needs are.
Thanks to all who show their support with donating items and money. The school’s teachers, staff and students are most appreciative.
Teacher & Staff Luncheon for Maiden Elementary School is Thursday, August 24th. A list of needed supplies is in the worship bulletin.
VBS 2017 SUCCESS
A word of thanks and praise to God for equipping us for this year’s Hero Central VBS program.
More than 80 folks were present the first night and the attendance each and every night was awesome. Children learned fantastic songs, stories, and became heroes themselves through crafts. We can’t leave out our imagination station with the special science projects of “elephant toothpaste” and the fascination with fingernail polish and poking pencils in a bag of water without losing a drop.

164th Year for Ballscreek Campmeeting
August 13th – 27th
Balls Creek Campgroundis a historic Methodistcampmeeting and national historic district located near Bandy's Crossroads, Catawba County, North Carolina. ... The campmeeting was established in 1853 and is believed to be one of the largest religiouscampgrounds
in the southern United States. (Information from the National Historic Registry)
Information from the Balls Creek Campground Website says, “In August 1853 Rev. H. H. Durant and Rev. Lewis Scarborough held religious services under a brush arbor at the site of the current Balls Creek Campground. Local Methodists in the community established the campmeeting and campground in that year. Those who attended the first campmeeting made their way there via dusty dirt roads in covered wagons. They remained onsite for the duration of the campmeeting living in their covered wagon or in canvas tents. About ten or twelve families built permanent wooden structures or “tents” for the purpose of the 1853 services.“
Folks built shacks to live in with very few accommodations and sawdust shavings for floors. School rivalries existed and lots of courting took place during the two weeks of campmeeting. For many, the tents were a vacation home. Eating out consists of a trip to “THE SHACK” to get a sandwich, ice cream or a paddle ball or other trinket.
Times have changed and most all tents are modernized with plumbing, cement floors and air conditioning units. But it’s still great to go walk around the “tents” and visit friends and families and worship as a community of believers in the arbor.
First United Methodist Church will be represented at the opening evening service. Rev. Tony Jordan will bring the message and the choir will sing several songs.
Services are held in the “arbor” nightly beginning at 6:15 pm for children and 7:30 pm for community worship.
A Youth Rally will be held on Wednesday, August 16th at 7:30 pm with Rev. Donovan Turnmire from First Baptist Church of Maiden as the service leader.
Friday, August 18th at 7:30 pm the Carolina Quartet from Bessemer City will lead a Song Service.
Saturday, August 19th at 7:30pm is the “BIG SING” event with MC’s: Michael and Dwayne Burke. The featured group is “The Wilmington Celebration Choir” from Wilmington, NC.
Another Youth Rally will be held on Wednesday, August 23rd at 7:30pm with Rev. Brent Travis of Living Word Church as the service leader.
On Friday, August 25th at 7:30pm Ben Cockman and students will perform a Music Recital
Saturday, August 26th beginning at 5:00pm there is an ice cream making contest. And at 5:30 a paddle ball contest. The 7:30pm service will be hosted by the Cockman Family.
The last day for campmeeting will be Sunday, August 27th with the morning service with Sunday School at 9:45am and Worship Service at 11:00 am.
Homecoming in September
The date is Sunday, September 24th with special music beginning at 10am and a covered dish luncheon to follow the service. Rev. Charles Curtis will be our speaker. Charlie is “our own” raised in First UMC and heard the call to preach later in his life. We look forward to having him and Patricia join us.
If you know of someone that you would like to invite to join us for homecoming, please get the information to Jo Ann Shelton or Denise Campbell by the 27th of August.
