According to a study published in the Journal ofthe American Medical Association, many elderly women are not aware of thecritical role which vitamin D plays in preventing fractures. This nutrienthelps the body use calcium to maintain strong bones. “We should make peopleaware of Vitamin D’s importance,” says Dr. Meryl S. Leboff. In their study,researcherscompared thirty women with hip fractures with sixty-eight who didnot have fractures. Half the broken-hip group had vitamin D deficiencies.Common sources of Vitamin includeeggs, milk and cereals. Experts advise asking your doctor about supplements.

Lycopene is an antioxidant and, as you may know, antioxidants are an importantpart of the body’s cell protection systems. Recent studies report anassociation between Lycopene-rich diet and a reduced risk of prostate cancer.

Tomatoes, tomato paste, pink grapefruit and watermelon are excellent sources ofLycopene. Make sure you’re getting enough of these fruits and vegetables inorder to prevent cancer diseases. In addition to the proper diet, a healthydiet includes regular exercise, medical check-ups and refraining from smoking.

The FDA (Federal Department ofAgriculture) has issued a warning to consumers about several sleeping pills. Inthe United States,at least three people die because of these pills and 119 other people havesuffered serious side effects. “We cannot be everywhere,” says FDA drug ChiefDr. Janet Woodstock, “and we really want to transmit this message to consumers:

study labels, look carefully at anything marked as an aid for sleeping” anddon’t consume any suspect ingredients.
