Course Description

Math I is designed to create a learning enriched environment that provides opportunities for success for all students. We will develop skills in understanding the logical structure of algebraic and geometric principles and in problem solving techniques through the use of technology, manipulatives, independent activities, group activities, projects, games, and shared roles and responsibilities.

There is a Math 1 state assessment at the end of this course. By Board policy, the assessment counts as 20% of the student’s yearly grade.

Grading Policy

First Quarter (40% of final grade):

Formal (Major Assignments: Test, Quizzes, Projects, etc.) 60%

Informal (Minor Assignments: Homework, Class work) 20%

Midterm Exam 20%

Second Quarter (40% of final grade):

Formal (Major Assignments: Test, Quizzes, Projects, etc.) 70%

Informal (Minor Assignments: Homework, Class work) 30%

Final Exam (20% of final grade)

Course Materials
  • Three Ring Binder (2 inch)  Pencils
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper  Dry Erase Markers
  • Graph Paper Binder Dividers
  • TI84 or TI83 plus Calculator is highly recommended, package of AAA batteries

**Classroom Donations: Kleenex, Expo Markers, Paper Towels, Lysol Wipes**

Three Ring Binder and Notebook
  • All warm ups, notes, class work, and homework should be kept in a three ring binder preferably arranged by these categories.
  • Students will be required to take notes during class, and keep them in the three ring binder.
  • Class work and homework will be done on loose-leaf paper checked for credit or accuracy. Full credit will only be given if all work is shown for problems and the assignments are readable.
  • All warm-ups, notes, class work, and homework must be dated and in order.

Attendance

Attendance and punctuality to every class is paramount. Students will be expected to be in his/her seat before the tardy bell rings. Students who are tardy must bring a pass to class from the SMC. PHS attendance and tardy policies will be followed. Students who are absent should be in contact with me in order to receive the makeup work. It is the students’ responsibility to get makeup work.PHS make-up polices will be followed.

Make Up Work , Late Work and Homework

Make-Up Work

It is the students’ responsibility to hand in all make-up work. Students will have 5 school days of the date of the students’ return to complete the make-up work. Students will be given full credit for make-up work handed in 5 school days after the missed day. After 5 school days, the assignments are considered late, and the student can only receive a maximum of 50% of its value. Make-up tests & quizzes will be taken before or after school. Date and time for all make-up work should be discussed and scheduled with the teacher within 5school days of the date of the students’ return to school. If you miss the day prior to a test, you are expected to take the test when scheduled. You have one week after you return to makeup a test.

Late Work

If a student is present and the assigned work is not completed, he/she may turn in the assignment the nextdayfor a maximum of 50% its value. After that, no credit will be given for the assignment.

Homework

In order for students to be successful, it is critical for students to complete homework. Homework will be assigned daily and checked for accuracy or effort. Problems must be copied, work must be shown, and responses must be complete and accurate.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available on Monday/Wednesday mornings from 6:30-7:00am and during lunch by appointment. Make-up tests and quizzes will be given during this time, or a scheduled time with Ms. Malone. Math department teachers are also available for tutoring as noted on the posted schedule.
