TheBeatles. Are they Still Popular? The Results of the Opinion Poll Made in our Town.

We’d like to present you a project “The Beatles. Are they Still Popular? The results of the opinion poll made in our town.” It was done by Ksenya Lisoyvan and Ann Panteleyeva. Our task was to investigate and compare the degree of The Beatles popularity among the people of different ages, to find out how many fans want to join a fan club and how the time influence the popularity.

First of all we worked out a questionnaire for the interview.

We decided to ask the 9-th and the 10-th year students to help us. We formed a group of ten students. We marked zones for interviewing, depending on where they lived.

We worked out a common form for filling it in denoting 4 age categories: from 15 to 20, from 20 to 30, from 30 to 50 and over 50. We determined the last date – the 25-th of September and decided the more people will be interviewed the better.

Some people who go to church refused to answer the questions about this group because The Beatles were the idols of the youth, and the Church called them the devil’s group.

We represented the results of the opinion poll by diagrams.

The first question was: “Have you heard about The Beatles?” We can see from the diagram that the overwhelming majority of the interviewees have heard about The Beatles. We were surprised that almost 10% of the people over 50 hadn’t heard about this group, but then understood, that it was possible because of the political situation in our country in 1960-s when The Beatles were banned.

The next question was: “What members of the group do you know?” As we can see, the more often mentioned names are John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The third question was: ”Do you know when and where were The Beatles formed?” We see that teenagers only listen to their songs and are not interested in their biographies. The adult people know when and where the group was formed.

The fourth question was: “What songs of this group do you know?” As you see the most famous songs are “Yesterday”, “Let it be”, “Love me do”,” Yellow submarine”.

The Summary Diagram shows you that The Beatles are well known in all age categories. We have found only 4 persons, who would like to form a fan-club, but we have interviewed only 786 persons and the population of Uryupinsk is more than forty thousand. So there is a possibility of the foundation of The Beatles’s fan-club.

I want to express my point of view of how the time influences the popularity. I think it depends of what we are comparing. The Beatles began to sing together 45 years ago. It is rather a long period for a rock group. Nobody remembers other groups, that were popular in the early 1960-th. On the other hand, if we compare this group for example with a German composer Iohann Sebastian Bach, who composed his works more than 300 years ago, we will see, that Bach is an elephant and The Beatles is a tiny beetle. But if we had interviewed people about Back using the same questions, I’m sure the majority would have known nothing about him but his name. Each of them has its own audience. Now The Beatles has no such a crazy popularity called “Beatlemania” as in the early 1960-th. They are not their idols any more. But these diagrams show us that they are still popular andwill have their audience in the future.
