IV.OPENING PRAYER

Priest: Let us pray

God of the living,
we believe that you are a God
of a love that is stronger than death
since your Son Jesus Christ, born as one of us,
destroyed death for ever.
Let all the faithful departed live
in the security of your love.
Let them enjoy peace, your peace,
which escaped them so often in life,
and give to us, too, the courage
to face life and to live it
in close union with your Son.
We ask you this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen

Priest:

V.SCRIPTURAL READING

(One or two readings may be chosen for the vigil today.)

Lector: A reading from…..

Reading 1

A reading from the Book of Wisdom.

But righteous people are protected by God and will never suffer torment. It is a foolish mistake to think that righteous people die and that their death is a terrible evil. They leave us, but it is not a disaster. In fact, the righteous are at peace. It might appear that they have suffered punishment, but they have the confident hope ofimmortality.

Their sufferings were light compared with the blessings they will receive. God has tested them, like gold in a furnace, and found them worthy to be with him. He has accepted them, just as he accepts the sacrifices which his worshippers burn on the altar.

When God comes to reward the righteous, they will blaze out against the wicked like fire in dry straw. They will rule over nations and peoples, and the Lord will be their king for ever. Those who have put their trust in God will come to understand the truth of his ways. Those who have been faithful will live with him in his love, for he is kind and merciful to the ones whom he has chosen.

Reading 2

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans.

Brothers and sisters.

This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to us.

For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time that God chose. It is a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person. It may even be that someone might dare to die for a good person. But God has shown us how much he loves us — it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!

By his bloodwe are now put right with God; how much more, then, will we be saved by him from God's anger! We were God's enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son. Now that we are God's friends, how much more will we be saved by Christ's life!

But that is not all; we rejoice because of what God has done through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has now made us God's friends.

Reading 3

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans.

Brothers and sisters.

For surely you know that when we were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death.By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.

For since we have become one with him in dying as he did, in the same way we shall be one with him by being raised to life as he was.And we know that our old being has been put to death with Christ on his cross, in order that the power of the sinful self might be destroyed, so that we should no longer be the slaves of sin.For when people die, they are set free from the power of sin.Since we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.For we know that Christ has been raised from death and will never die again — death will no longer rule over him.

Lector:The Word of the Lord.

(A period of silence, 2 to 3 minutes, for quiet reflection is allotted after each scripture reading. If only one reading will be used, the period of silence is extended up to 5 minutes.)

VI.POINTS FOR REFLECTION

  1. (From “Daily Prayer 2017”, LTP, Archdiocese of Chicago)

This month of November, we remember all the deceased.

In many cultures families visit cemeteries on this day, clean the graves, light candles, and tell stories.

Profound truths that lie deep in our hearts rise to the surface.

What we believe about love, forgiveness, faith, and resurrection fills our thoughts.

Whom do you still need to forgive? Do so today.

Is there anger or pain still wrapped around your heart? Release it today.

Does love cause you to weep? Go ahead, and tell your children and your children’s children stories they need to know about relatives and friends.

Today we also pray for those who most need our prayers: those forgotten.

(SHORT MOMENT OF REFLECTION - 5 to 7 minutes)

COMMENTATOR: Please all stand

VII.INTERCESSIONS

Priest: To our Lord, who holds out the truth, we pray:

Response:Hear us, Lord.

Lector:When suffering and pain overwhelm us, may the gentle care of the Church be our balm, solace, and strength, we pray:

When world leaders make decisions, may God’s Word inspire them to bring about peace, we pray:

When we feel lost, or confused, may we find shelter in the loving arms of God, we pray:

When family and friends die, may our belief in the resurrection sustain us, we pray:

When people struggle to persevere in this life, may the Giver of all life be their hope, we pray:

Priest: Lord of Life, you provide us hope in the resurrection.

When our loved ones are called from this life may their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed through your mercy, rest in peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Priest:At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

All:Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

COMMENTATOR:Let us all kneel for the Benediction
