First and Goal

Pick a football game for the ’15-’16 season. Go online and find a play-by-play of the game. Choose a quarter from that game (must be at least 20 plays with ball movement in the quarter. Incomplete passes and plays called for penalties do not count).

Activity #1:

Use integers to write an equation representing each play in the quarter. Show the starting point, end point, and yards gained or lost. Keep in mind that when a play crosses the 50 yard line you will need to have a + and then a – to get to the right end point. You can use the starting and ending yard lines from the play-by-play to create an accurate equation. (see the last equation in the example for a play that crosses the 50 yard line)

List the total yards gained or lost by each team in the quarter you are referencing.

Here is an example using the Denver vs. Oakland game (notice that the play-by-play is included in the example):

1st and 10 at OAK 29 (14:05 - 1st) (Shotgun) D.Carr pass short left to A.Cooper pushed ob at OAK 42 for 13 yards (D.Trevathan, B.Roby)

29 + 13 = 42

1st and 10 at OAK 42 (13:27 - 1st) (Shotgun) L.Murray right tackle to OAK 43 for 1 yard (D.Wolfe)

42 + 1 = 43

2nd and 9 at OAK 43 (12:55 - 1st) L.Murray right tackle to OAK 45 for 2 yards (D.Trevathan). PENALTY on OAK-A.Howard, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at OAK 43 - No Play

43 + 2 – 2 – 10 = 33

2nd and 19 at OAK 33 (12:27 - 1st) (Shotgun) D.Carr pass short middle to L.Murray to OAK 37 for 4 yards (D.Ware)

33 + 4 = 37

3rd and 15 at OAK 37 (11:45 - 1st) (Shotgun) D.Carr pass short right to L.Murray to OAK 37 for no gain (M.Jackson, T.Ward)

37 + 0 = 37

4th and 15 at OAK 37 (11:06 - 1st) M.King punts 51 yards to DEN 12, Center

J.Condo, downed by OAK-A.Holmes

37 + 13 – 38 = 12

Activity #2:

Choose 10 plays from your list of equations. Draw a simple diagram showing the ball movement, the starting and ending yard lines, and the yards gained or lost. Label the diagrams with all of these things. You can find a picture or diagram of a football field online, and then draw the ball movement on that if you would like.

Create a cover with an appropriate, color illustration, your name, and the class.
