American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED for the Layperson

Course Description:

This course presents the methods of First Aid, CPR, and AED as used by the layperson for adult, child, and infant medical emergencies including basic life support and airway obstruction. Upon successful completion of the course, student will be awarded one semester’s worth of credit toward the Physical Education requirement (and will be officially certified by the American Red Cross in CPR, First Aid, and AED if they so choose AND pay the $30 American Red Cross administrative fee).

Course Objectives:

Ø  Student will successfully demonstrate ARC skills of First Aid and emergency care for adults, children, and infants

Ø  Student will successfully demonstrate ARC skills of CPR for adults, children, and infants

Ø  Student will successfully demonstrate ARC skills of AED use for adults and children

Grading: Pass/Fail; 100%

Number of Exams: One pass/fail take-home exam (accounts for 50% of total grade); a passing grade of the exam requires an 80% or better score

Competencies (skills tests): Students must perform required skill sets for CPR, First Aid, and AED as properly administered to Adults, Children, and Infants throughout class meetings (accounts for 50% of total grade)

Attendance**: Students are expected to attend and participate in all classes until conclusion of course

**It is the policy of the Brandeis University Physical Education Department that all classes meeting only once per week for only “half” of the semester shall allow only one absence (repetitive tardiness will result in an absence). If you miss more than one class, you will not be eligible for certification by the ARC. If you miss more than two classes, you will be subject to failing the course. If you have one absence and wish to get certified, you MUST make up the missed class with Coach Johnson or you will not be rendered certifiable by the ARC.

Note: There will be days when we will be “on the floor” performing CPR, AED, and First Aid skill sets so PLEASE wear appropriate attire for such. Thank you.
