Horizontal Ventilation

Accelerating
Act of speeding up.

Adjacent
Next to or in close proximity.

Adjuncts
An item that attaches to another object to increase efficiency; ie-cheater bar.

Adverse
Abnormal or unusual; as in conditions.

Aesthetic
Pleasing (visual) qualities.

Awning
Window or covering that consist of one or more sashes that are hinged at the top and swing outward.

Blower
Any device positioned outside a space to blow fresh air into a space.

Breach
To make an opening (usually in masonry wall) to allow access for ventilation.

Casement Window
Window type that consists of one or two sashes, one or both of which removable to open like a door along hinges located at the side of the sash.

Compromised
To interrupt the integrity of a situation or object; ie-structural integrity.

Conservative
A cautious, moderate action.

Detrimental
Action that causes harm or injury.

Double-hung Window
Window type consisting of two movable sashes that slide up and down in a track.

Drywall
Wall finish consisting of sheets of gypsum board.

Ejector
Any device positioned within a space to blow contaminated air out of that space.

Embedded
Enclosed in an object firmly or snugly.

Enhancing
Act of increasing effectiveness or value.

Fire Wall
Fire-resistive assembly designed to reduce the likelihood of horizontal fire spread by compartmentalizing a building.

Fixed Window
Window type that consists of one or more panes and cannot be opened.

Formidable
Difficult to undertake; not advisable.

Glazed
A type of glassy coating found on many fixed windows.

Hopper Window
Windows that are hinged at the bottom and swing inward.

Horizontal Sliding Window
Window type consisting of two or more sashes, one of which is fixed while other(s) move laterally in a track.

Hydraulic Ventilation
Use of a fog stream to evacuate smoke and contaminants from a structure.

Impede
To obstruct progress.

Impediment
An object that does not allow progress.

In tandem
An arrangement of objects one behind another.

Inadvertently
Accidentally; not on purpose.

Jalousie Window
Window type that consists of a series of narrow, horizontal panes set in a bracket so that the bottom of each pane overlaps the top of the pain below it; opened by rotating the panes outward.

Perimeter
The outer limits of an area.

Pivot
An object that turns while attached to a central location.

Pneumatic
Of or relating to air or other gases.

Projected Window
Window type hinged at the top or bottom and swing inward or outward; also called factory windows.

Resilient
Able to recover from danger or harm; not easily affected.

Salvage
To save or return to original condition.

Sash
A frame in which a window or doors are set.

Single-hung Window
Window type consisting of one fixed sash that slides up and down a track.

Stem Wall
Vertical structure that rests on the foundation of a building and upon which the first floor rests.

Stud
Vertical structural framing member generally made of wood or light metal.

Veneer
An outer decorative covering of a wall or object; ie-brick, siding.

Versatility
Property that allows for many uses.
