FIRE SAFETY AT HOSPITALS,NURSING HOMES AND ALL INSTITUTIONS

Please ensure that when you go to any place of work that you familiarize yourself with emergency number for cardiac arrests and for fire.It is important that you make yourself aware where the assembly points are in the event of a fire.

First Time Registration: Welcome to WebPortal.

To register for the first time please click on the registration button as seen in image 1

You will then be presented with a registration form, all fields must be completed including a VALID email address. This registration process is a one off, next time you visit WebPortal simply login using your own chosen ‘User ID and Password’ also select from the drop down menu your department. Please note your password is encrypted when you type.

There is a Generic Password for all staff to use:

Password: nurse on call

Next time you login simply type your user ID and password at the login screen above, and click LOGIN

Once logged in you will see your home page, image 3 below. From here you can start your course tutorial by clicking on ‘View Tutorial’.

Should you need to exit at any point from within the course you can always return to the same page by using the Book Marking feature. DO NOT LEAVE a course open without any activity for too long, as the connection to the system database will be terminated and any test results may be lost

There is simple test at the end of the tutorial.

To view your history at any point, click on the View History button, this will bring up a new page showing how far you have progressed with the course. If you have completed the test paper, this will also show up in your history page along with a print certificate option.

PRE FIRE PLANNING:

1. Become familiar with the area by observing where the nearest fire point and break glass unit is located.

2.Know all available evacuation routes and where they lead to.

3.Never use door wedges to keep fire doors open.

4.Never obstruct corridors with furniture or equipment.

5.Never leave appliances unattended ie cooker,microwave etc

6. Practice good housekeeping at all times by adopting a "clean Area Policy" and encouraging others to" Clean as you go."

7.Never use damaged or faulty equipment - get them repaired or replaced.

8.Switch off non - essential equipment where possible.

ON DISCOVERY OF A FIRE:

1. Dial the emergency number to call the fire brigade.Break the nearest break glass unit.Inform others verbally.

2.Fight the fire only if safe to do so.

3.Prepare to evacuate by making the area safe-isolate oxygen supplies,electrical equipment etc.

4.Direct staff and patients to nearest evacuation route - use stairways and horizontal evacuation routes where required.

5.Instruct staff and patients not to use lifts.

6.Close all windows and fire doors and assemble at nearest assembly point.

7. Do not re - enter building.

Fire Services Act 1981 main provisions are:

Prevent the outbreak of fire doing proper Risk Assessments,proper house keeping and a clearly defined smoking policy.

You can minimise the risk in the event of an outbreak by

- Good smoke detectors

- Proper Fire Fighting Equipment

- Emergency Lightenin- People trained in Emergency plans and fire drills

Public Health (Tobacco)Regulations 2000

- Ban on smoking in the workplace

- Up to 3000 eurofines

- Must ensure smoke does not mitigate back into the building from smoking shelters

- Designated smoking shelters
