A Letter Home
Imagine that the year is 1968, and you are a recent high school graduate. You have been drafted into the military, and were sent to Vietnam to fight in the war. You have only been in Vietnam a few short weeks, and you have experienced the horrors of war, much like Private First Class Paul Berlin in the short story “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?”
Write a letter to someone back home. It can be to a parent or sibling, a friend or former teacher; anyone you may be missing while you are away. In your letter include the following:
1. A description of the place you are in. Is it hot, is it nighttime, the sea or the jungle?
2. Describe your fellow soldiers. Have you met them? Do you know their names?
3. Describe what your day is like. Do you march or fight? Is it quiet or are you busy?
4. Have you seen anything scary or unusual?
5. What do you miss from home?
6. Your emotions while in Vietnam.
7. Anything else you may think is important for you family to know.
This assignment must be in a letter format (greeting, the date, salutation). Please type this assignment. Feel free to add related pictures or artwork to your letter.
Each letter must be neat and organized. Effort must be visible. The grade is based on creativity, neatness, accuracy, and effort. (There is a big difference between something you jot down in a few minutes and something you put time into). This assignment is worth 50 points.
It is due Monday, October 2, 2017.
