COURSE DESCRIPTION

FFP 2780 Fire Department Organization and Administration (3) (A.A.S./A.S.). This course offers a study of managerial and administrative concepts and principles as they pertain to and affect the daily operation of a fire department. Managerial theories and application to planning and organization as related to scheduling, budgeting, reporting, personnel, discipline, command leadership, equipment maintenance, training and community relations are stressed.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

The student, at the successful completion of this course, should be able to:

1.Identify the organization of the fire department.
2.Identify the size of the fire department, the scope of its operation, and the standard operational procedures.

3.Identify the fire department rules and regulations that apply to the position of the firefighter.

4.Identify responsibilities of the firefighter in determining the point of origin, cause, and protection of evidence in fires.

5.Identify the components of the fire suppression organization in the authority having jurisdiction.

  1. Identify the authority and responsibility of each component of the fire suppression organization in the authority having jurisdiction.

7.Describe the lines of authority within the department.

8.Describe the duties and responsibilities of each rank in both line and staff functions.

9.Describe the chain of command of the fireground organization in the authority having jurisdiction.

10.Identify the public and private national organizations the support the fire protection services, and describe the
functions of each.

12.Identify the public and private local organizations that support the fire protection services, and describe the
functions of each.

13.Develop a schedule for company: manpower, distribution, equipment maintenance, training and material
allocations.

14.Describe essentials necessary for a good company training session.

15.Conduct a company training session.

16.Apply principles and concepts learned to case studies based upon fire company administrative operations.

17.Create a budget and payroll for the company.

18.Describe personal selection and records.

19.Write a daily plan of operation.

20.Describe public relations and how it affects daily operation of a company.

21.List methods of procuring equipment and supplies.

22.Describe procedures to follow in maintenance of apparatus and equipment.

23.Write the procedures used in training of personnel and operations research.

24.Demonstrate communications, including receipt and transmission of alarms and routine calls.

25.Discuss fire prevention inspection services and enforcement of fire codes.

26.Identify the most common causes of personal injury to the firefighter.

27.Given specific hazards, create an accident prevention program applicable to the officer's duty assignment.

28.Given actual or simulated accident and injury reports, evaluate the reports and describe appropriate prevention measures.

29.Given rules, regulations, directives, policies, and laws regarding safety practices: (a) demonstrate procedures required to enforce the safety regulations, (b) demonstrate how to maintain complete and accurate records.

30.Take a test (written/oral) on each academic portion of the outline.

31.Take a performance test on certain portions of the outline.
