Fire Chief

The Oregon Area Fire/EMS District – located near Madison, WI is seeking an innovative leader with exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills to lead a department to meet the current and future needs of their community. The Oregon Fire Department is a combination department comprised of full-time (5) and paid on call (~36) personnel and is now seeking a full-time fire chief. The Department provides fire suppression, EMS at the IV Tech level, prevention and public safety.

The District serves approximately 16,000 residents that encompass’ over 44 square miles through an intergovernmental agreement. The District includes the Village of Oregon and the Towns of Oregon, Dunn, and Rutland. The Village of Oregon was originally the beginning of the Oregon Trail, and now is home to residential and retail businesses. The department has one station and a budget slightly over $1 million. Staffing is a major concern within the department, so the next Chief must have experience in creative staffing methodologies that align with the culture of the organization as well as provide a quality service to the community. Although the major emphasis of this position is leadership and administration, on occasion, this may be a working supervisor position.

The Fire Chief position reports to a five member Board of Commission who govern the overall operations of the department; and to a Joint Board of appointed citizens who have authority over the hiring, promotion, and discipline of the organization per WI Stats 62.13. The members of the Fire Department are represented by the IAFF.

The Fire Chief must possess demonstrated leadership, supervisory, employee relations, strategic planning, and budgetary skills together with a strong background in an integrated Fire and EMS Service. Bachelor’s degree, and/or completion of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program is strongly preferred; an associate degree in fire science and/or business is required; a minimum of 5 years demonstrated management experience in a senior administrative position in a career or combination department is require. Fire Officer III preferred. Must have or held an EMT license, as well as worked in an integrated Fire/EMS organization. A demonstrated history of achieving positive labor relations, including working knowledge of a union organization; as well as public communication skills and community interaction is strongly recommended. The ability to work cooperatively with neighboring departments whether career, paid on-call, and/or volunteer is essential.
