Fine Art Digital Photography - Class Rules and Expectations

Fine Art Digital Photography is an Envision Visual Arts class with digital artistictools such as cameras, computers, software programs and printers. The emphasis is approaching photography as a means of artistic expression (this is different from photojournalism or snapshots). Students at all artistic levels are able to succeed as long as they commit themselves to the coursework. Computer experience is expected, but no prior knowledge of the software programs used in the class is required. Students will be able to create meaningful pieces to add to their portfolioutilizing the project-based nature of the class.

Expectations

Students are expected toembrace the creative process, to learn from each other and share the studio. Please be prepared to come to class every day with an attitude of collaboration, tolerance and cooperation. Students are also expected to respect our precious (and expensive) equipment and resources. Student success in the course is based on mastery of new material, completion of assignments and projects. All students are expected to behave in a professional and ethical manner.

Materials

Students are required to keep a sketchbook and bring it to class everyday. A flash memory drive of at least one gigabyte is highly recommended to transport images to and from class. Storing and retrieving images by email or online galleries results in poor resolution compressed images that are unacceptable for grading and printing. Camera use and lab time are privileges provided to all students. Students are welcome to use their own digital camera to complete assignments, but the camera must have MANUAL controls (focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and be able to record EXIF data). Students wishing to usetheir own cameras should review it with Mr. Younglund to evaluate its suitabilityfor class assignments.

Figure and Film Studies

During the course sequence of Envision Visual Art courses, students will work with visual materials such as famous works of art, artist documentaries, charts and diagrams, videos and online resources. This material may contain anatomical references, nude model poses and views of artists working from the nude in their studios. If you have questionsor concerns about this material, please contact Mr. Younglund directly.

Grading

30% Practice WorkPractice work includes daily response sketchbook, class work, homework, quizzes, tests and research assignments.

70% Presentation WorkPresentation work consists of all the major projects that students complete which are presented to the class during critiques. Presentation work is graded based on a rubric for technical and artistic skill, meaning and originality, and student ability to evaluate work articulately.

Students seeking an A grade must complete all aspects of all assignments and turn them in on time. Grades, as well as comments, are communicated via the Aeries portal.

Late Work Completed projects and evaluations are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Late work will lose one grade (10%) per class day that a project is late. All due dates are posted online in the class calendar and announced in class.

"Re-grades"Students may redo any on-time presentation work for a higher grade. A student will need to make an appointment with me for a re-grade conference;please bring the original grading sheet to that conference. All re-grades must be completed within ten school days of the posted grade.

Attendance

Prompt attendance to class is extremely important. Be seated in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings. The SDUHSD tardy policy is as follows: 1st tardy - teacher warning, 2nd - phone call home, 3rd – SaturdaySchool, 4th – referral to Assistant Principal.

Excused Absences:Students are responsible to learn the material and make up work missed during an excused absence. Students have two days to make up missing work from each excused absence; after that time assignments will be counted as late.

Students who are leaving during the school day for any reason are required to obtain the absence slipfrom the Attendance Office during non-class time.

Classroom Rules & Expectations

  • Be on time and on task for the duration of the class period.
  • Bring your sketchbook to class EVERYDAY.
  • Behave and dress appropriately and professionally in the classroom and on location.
  • When on location, be only where you are permitted by written agreement.
  • No cell phones or electronic devices (bell-to-bell- NO CELL).
  • No food or drink of any kind in the classroom.

All rules, regardless of location, exist from bell-to-bell because of the unique nature of photography assignments outside of the classroom. Students who misbehave in anyway outside of the classroom, including being off task while working with the camera, will have their camera privileges taken away.

Cell Phone Policy- Cell phones should be silent and invisible for the duration of the academic period. If these items are out during class time, they will be confiscated and turned in to Administration.

TheCCA Dishonesty Policy will be enforced. Any unauthorized collaboration, plagiarism, forgery, theft, or other dishonest behavior will result in a zero grade, administrative referral, and parent contact.

Student produced images are celebrated and used in art shows and online galleries of class work. If you prefer to not have your students appear in these photos please let me know on the attached form or by email request.

I am looking forward to the students’ work in Fine Art Digital Photography. I am continuously amazed - not only by the work that the students generate but also by the students themselves. It is going to be a great experience for all of us. I hope to see you at Back to School Night.
