Other Trip Basics
Purpose: Since students earn a government credit in CIS this year, the state capitol building is the perfect tie in during this curriculum. They will get a tour and possibly meet a state congressperson. They will also have the valuable opportunity to visit a college campus. On top of that, many students are taught about One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and realize its importance in Oregon’s literary history. Aside from the educational opportunities available on this trip, students will also get the chance to have some fun and get to know their peers better!
Chaperones: Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Noon, and parent volunteers; we will have one chaperone for every 10-15 students. Students will have time to walk around in small groups at the malls and food truck pods. They will have a chaperone with them during the scavenger hunt.
Transportation: We will be using a bus and driver through First Student. Transportation fees are covered by BIS for this trip.
Rooming: Students will share rooms in groups of approximately 4.
Packing: Please pack fairly lightly as we will have a full bus! Dress appropriately for the state capitol—no shorts or t-shirts. Ideal dress is nice jeans with a tucked-in shirt or sweater, khakis, etc. Dress comfortably as we will be walking quite a bit. Wear clothes you can run around in for laser tag. Bring layers and something warm and waterproof for our day in Portland! We will be outside a lot that day, rain or shine!
Food/ Money: You’ll need approximately $40 for food. Please bring some in cash as not all businesses, especially food trucks, will take cards. Students will be responsible for all meals except breakfast at the hotel. Feel free to take snacks along as well!
