Final Design Project

Objective: Promoting a Band – Much like any organization or company there is a promotional/press package that is distributed to interest new clients or to shop for bigger opportunities. This package will visually encapsulate the achievements, the look, and the work this band has done. The audience and function in question would be mostly to industry representatives in one part and as just a visual piece for any fans/music listeners that are curious to know more about the band.

Media and Format: A redesign of the online website (Myspace) that will include making a banner for the headline/banners for links to merch store/formatting the page to be easily digestible. Using Edward Tufte’sPrinciples of Analytical Design I will keep in mind the information flow and packaging of this information to make clear stepping stones for information dissemination. The other format I hope to tackle will be a physical press kit, having the option of both online and physical representation can speed up processes of distributing and having packages read. Semiotics or the study of signs is concerned with meaning-making and can be represented in many forms (Sunil Manghani, Arthur Piper and Jon Simons (2006, p 102)) I think that having almost a portfolio style kit will make the package stand out more in relation with other packages that probably are made with the same purposes in mind.

Thematically I will try to stay within the realms of established themes we’ve already set up unless I successfully rebrand and am content with a new colour scheme or element I want to base my visualization around. In the reading “Electronic Tools,” it says that “tools are made to accomplish our purposes, and in this sense they represent desires and intentions. We make our tools and our tools make us: by taking up particular tools we accede to desire and we manifest intentions” (Sunil, Manghani, Arthur Piper, and Jon Simmons (2006,p.227)). Thematically if I can narrow down a scheme or element that can stand by itself to represent the band then it only reinforces this notion where the theme will be a tool to represent ourselves and will only show through even more so through the tool of a properly made press kit.
