God’s Promise

Proto-______Gen 3:15

“I will put ______ between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head while you strike at his heel”

5 teachings to be believed

Mother of God, ______

Immaculate ______

Perpetual ______(Aeiparthenos)

Assumption

Mother in the order of ______

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (Jn 1:1)

“Amen, amen, I say to you before Abraham came to be, I AM” (Jn 8:58)

1) Mother of God

Jesus is Truly God and Truly Man

The Nicene Creed, which we profess at mass, refers to Jesus as God, “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God.” This affirms the divinity of Christ. It continues, “by the power of the Holy Spirit He was______of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” This affirms His humanity.

Mary did not give Jesus His divinity (she did not make Him God).

Mary provided the matter, Christ’s ______, which was pierced for our salvation.

She housed the God-Man within her womb (She is the first tabernacle) for 9 months and she gave birth to Him, who is God. Therefore she is the Mother of God, ______.

How Was Mary Prepared for Her Unique Role in God’s Work of Salvation ?

2) The Immaculate Conception

Mary was preserved from sin from the moment of her ______in the womb of her mother, St. Ann.

How?

God wills to normally work through the ______of the Church but He is not bound to work through the sacraments. With the case of Mary, God chose to preserve her immune from all stain of original sin at the time of her conception.

This was realized by a ______and privilege of God, by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race.

God is not bound by ______either; He chose to apply the ______from Christ’s victorious Cross and Resurrection to His Mother at the time of her conception.

Why?

Mary has a ______position in the salvation of the world (Gen 3:15). She is the only Mother of God and she was given the gifts that are appropriate to her unique position.

Mary is the woman from Gen 3:15. It is her and her Seed (Jesus) who have ______ for the serpent and his seed (sin). This enmity is complete and total, therefore, we believe not only that Mary was conceived without sin but also that she ______free from sin her whole life.

Enmity = Complete and total opposition. Eve did not have enmity with the serpent, she sinned and therefore, “joined his team” at least for a period of time.

This is why the angel Gabriel greeted Mary in this unique way, “Hail, ______of ______, the Lord is with you” (LK 1:28)

______= Hail, you who have been perfected in grace. This is a perfect participle, an action completed in the past but with relevance to the present.

The angel is not saying “Hail, you who are graced now that I am here”…or… “Hail, you who have just become graced.”

The New Eve (CCC 494)

The knot of ______disobedience was untied by ______obedience: What the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith.”

- St. Irenaeus

______through Eve, life through Mary

- St. Jerome

3) Perpetual Virginity. Aeiparthenos= The______-______

•Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?“ (Lk 1:34)

“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your ______, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 1:20)

The virginal conception of Jesus is a ______that He truly is the Son of God who came in a humanity like our own.

The Church ______what she ______. In the liturgy Mary is celebrated as the “Ever-virgin” in the first Eucharistic prayer.

The faith of the Church holds that Mary ______a virgin her whole life on earth.

In objection to the doctrine of perpetual virginity some argue that Scripture mentions “brothers” of Jesus.

The word brothers in English is a translation from the Greek word ______which is a translation of the Hebrew wordäh. This can refer to a cousin, near relative, kinsman (from your home town).

äh is used in the Old testament to refer to relationships which could not have been that of brothers: Abram’s relationship with Lot (Uncle – Nephew; see Gen 13:8) and Jacob’s relationship with Laban (Uncle – Nephew; see Gen 29:15).

The more you come to appreciate the unique position of Mary, the more you come to understand that it would not have been appropriate for a human being with original sin to occupy the same womb as the Christ. See Handout by James Penrice

Although Mary did not have any other children, Jesus did ______to all the members of the Church as a ______. (This will be covered in # 5)

4) The Assumption

“The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life was assumed ______and ______into heavenly glory” – Pope Pius XII

Mary’s Assumption is a consequence of the ______.

Mary triumphs over ______by the Immaculate Conception and over ______by the Assumption.

Because she was conceived without original sin, Mary did not have to endure its ______, one of which was the corruption of death.

The Assumption is a gift of ______from God to His Mother.

Two traditions:

A) ______ – Maintain that Mary actually experienced the separation of body and soul for three days before the Assumption. This is traditionally called the Dormition of Mary. They say Mary would have wanted to endure this as her Son did.

B) ______– Mary did not experience any type of separation of her body and soul before the Assumption.

The Church has not declared either position officially correct. As a Catholic you may believe one or the other. The Mortalists are usually ______rite Catholic.

5) Mother in the Order of Grace

“When Jesus saw His Mother and the disciple there whom He loved, He said to His Mother, ‘______, behold, your son.’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your ______.’” (Jn 19:26-27)

Mary ______by her obedience, faith, hope and burning charity in the work of the Savior in giving back supernatural life to souls. Wherefore she is our mother in the order of grace.

In this sense Mary cooperated with her Son in giving us supernatural life. She continues to do this by her ______for us before God in heaven.

The fervent prayer of a ______person is very powerful” (Jas 5:16)

As our Mother in the order or Grace, Mary is invoked by the faithful under the following titles:

______

Mary ______in the ______of Jesus, she participates in the suffering heart of her Son.

As a man (Adam) and woman (Eve) fell from grace and brought sin to all humanity so a Man (Christ) and woman (Mary) redeemed humanity by their unselfish and complete offering to the Father.

Mediatrix or go between.

Mary mediates Christ, who is the author of all grace, to the world.

As Christ is the one Redeemer and Mary the Co-redemptrix so to Christ is the one Mediator and Mary the Medatrix.

______brings God to man and man to God in a very real and unique way.

Mary agreed to be the Mother of God, bringing Him to the world (Lk1:38)

Mary brings God in her ______to Elizabeth and John (Lk1:42)

She asks ______to help the people at the wedding of Cana and then tells the people to do whatever Jesus told them (Jn 2:5).

As Mother of Jesus and the Church, Mary places herself in the middle, ______for her Son as well as her sons and daughters.

God chose to send Jesus, the author of all grace to the world through Mary. God ______to send His grace to us ______Mary. It is by her intercession that we receive the life and love of God.

Advocate – from the Latin ______meaning to speak on behalf of

Every Davidic king had his ______as the counselor and advocate for the people of Israel.

The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."

An example of Mary as Advocate is the ______feast of Cana. The hosts of the party ran out of wine, which seems like a simple problem, but this problem of the people led Mary to approach her Son and ask Him to begin His public ministry.

In ______to His mother’s request for the people, Jesus worked His first miracle, publicly revealing Himself. (Jn 2:5)
