File 034 Ft Notes for 007; 008; & 009.

NOTE ~~1.. Henry Male was married 3 times. His first wife was Mary Blanch LIVERMORE. The family believed, apparently, that they would receive money from the Livermore estate. From what I can glean, the Livermores were large land holders and beef producers in Victoria. When Mary’s father died, he left nothing to her and her family. Henry was regarded as being not up to standard, and that Mary had married below her station in life.

NOTE ~~2 . Frank was about 14 years younger than his brothers. He was a salesman and in later years had a shop on Enoggera Road Red Hill in Brisbane. When my mother used to go to Chas Sanky Frasers to have her eyes tested for stronger glasses, they invariable brought out the form for Franks wife. We never knew them personally. In 1996, some tenants in a house in Red Hill, found in the ceilings 4 portrait size photos. On the back of one of them written in pencil was “ To Frank from Henry Males estate. 1926.” The tenants knew of a Male who lived not far from them and he was the son of the Rev Allan MALE. Allan got the photos, did not know anything about them and in conversation told June Male, who told me. From the work done by Betty Male I found that they were photos of Henry and his 3 sons. Since verified by Bette Dryden who had similar photo. I got in touch with Allan McGill, the eldest child of Betty McGILL, the eldest daughter of Frank Livermore MALE, and also Nancy Heaton, the youngest daughter of Frank Livermore Male. Both wanted the photos, so I left it to Allan Male to decide. I think he gave them to Allan McGill. It turned out that the house that the photos were found in was at one time owned and lived in by Frank Livermore Male.

Betty McGill did Keith’s family Tree, then started to do her fathers. She had the skeleton work done when she died of that wasting muscular disease. It was after Betty had passed away that I first became aware of the existence of her work. At that time about half the Males in the Brisbane Telephone Directory belonged to this Tree and the rest belonged to my Tree. It took quite a lot of convincing to let Keith allow me to borrow Betty’s works so that I could copy same. Betty only went back as far as John Male and Elizabeth Barrett. It cost me $50 to find that Johns father was Lazarus Male and that he fitted into my Tree.

Note~~3. Joseph ( Joe ) Male as a traveling salesman for I.B.C.. He had a 2 door company car and traveled most of Qld. Died from septicemia. Joe and Ada married in 1902. Ada was married 3 times. It is PRESUMED that the 2 children named as Joseph Norman Male and Percival Walter Harpan Male were children from her 1st marriage, not her second. Ada’s 3rd marriage was to ? HOEVEL. There was a daughter from this marriage, one Ida Elizabeth Josephine HOEVEL, born between 1910 and 1913. Ida had 2 daughters and in 1996, both were alive living in Tasmania. One was Mrs Ida Elizabeth Julieanne HOLNESS and the other was Mrs Rosea Alicia WALLIS.

Note ~~4. When I started filling in the skeleton Tree that Betty McGill had left, I rang every one named Male in the Brisbane Telephone Directory trying to find out where they fitted in. One telephone always rang out, and that was for an O. Male.. Eventually I asked my daughter Kathy who lived not far from there to go around and see what was happening. She reported back that there had been an old lady living there but she hadn’t been seen for some time and that the son-in-law mowed the lawn every 2nd week end. Eventually she ran down who the son-in-law was, and it was Thomas Clacher, the optometrist, and it turned out he had a surgery across the road from the Bank where Kathy worked. So that solved who O. Male was. Actually Olive had passed away sometime before and the place was still going through the Estate stage.

Tom and Pauline’s daughter, Suzanne, is the well known vocalist, Suzanne Clachair. It turns out Suzanne went to school with Joseph Dean, who ended up marrying Susanne’s 3rd cousin, Catherine Rea. Catherine and Suzanne have not met as far as I know.

Note ~~5 .. Joan and her brother Leo Farrelly married brother and sister in Hugo and Elaine FITZ-HERBERT. Joan went to St Rita’s School in Clayfield where she was a day scholar, and at the same time, Jim Male’s sister, Sharlene, attended the same school as a boarder.Joan since passed away. Cancer

Note ~~6.. William was a military man and was stationed in Scotland. When he returned to England he had a wife, Elizabeth who was about 15 years younger than him. He also had a daughter Jane who we believe was born about 1820. Unable to find anything in Scotland about them. Now we believe that they were married in Somerset and we have found Jane’s birth place..

Note ~~ 7. There was a mystery surrounding Louisa. It took June and Frank some time before they solved it. Had to use Freedom of Information Act to get to the facts. The story handed down through the family was that Louisa after the birth of her last child went bush with the baby and the baby died. Louisa was committed to a mental institution where she died. What Frank and June found was that Louisa was committed when she was 38 and she died there when she was 80. None of the family knew she was still alive up to that time. The papers showed that Louisa when she was admitted claimed that a horse had kicked the baby and killed it and she was coming in for a holiday. Records also show that at the time of admittance, she had only one eye, the other having been removed with a cancerous growth prior to her admittance. Louisa worked in the Laundry at Willoburn Mental Hospital. What has upset Frank and June is that Louisa is buried in a paupers grave. They intend to rectify that.

Note ~~8. For a while we could not work out if Charles’ mother was Henrys wife or Henry’s sister. The Barrington 1881 Census puts Charles as the son of Henrys wife. When Charles returned from WW!, Sarah his wife had disappeared. Emma defactoed with Charles and they raised Emma Baxter whom they fostered. Never adopted.. The Greary Tree has Emma and Charles as man and wife. Not so. It appears that Emma also was married and separated at the time.. At the 1916 Australian Buck jumping Championships held in Brisbane [ where the Enoggera Army Barracks now are ], Charles won the Championship on board the famous “ ARISTROCRAT ‘’ I have actually seen the medal. John Male, Frank’s brother had it and was having it polished.

Note ~~9. When John retired from the railways as a Ganger, he would occasionally travel into Oakey. Sometimes while there, he would be mistaken for Frank Male of TARA. Neither John or Frank knew each other and would have been 3rd cousins. Beryl is Edna’s daughter, and her father is reputed to have been a catholic traveling salesman. This may explain why Edna had no time for Catholics. It was only later in life that it was acknowledged that Beryl was a half sister to the rest. Was kept very quiet.

NORTH QLD REGISTRAR. November 1977...... The death occurred in Toowoomba, after a short illness, last Saturday of Mr Jack ( Warianna ) Male aged 81. Mr Male was born of English parents, James ( Jim ) and Louise Male at Warianna Creek on Afton Downs Hughendem, in 1891. After leaving school at an early age, with his brothers, he worked in the sheep and cattle industry on properties such as Tower Hill in the Muttaburra District; Landsborough Downs and Fairlight in the Hughenden district, and also in the Torrens Ck and Prairie districts. He later joined the railway, and with his wife Edna ( Bulley ) of Prairie, lived in the Richmond where he worked on the lengths for many years. He was transferred to Oakey, and later Rosalie Plains as a Ganger. The Male home was always open to all, and the home on Rosalie Plains was a welcome place for many a weary traveller or railway man. Upon his retirement some years ago, Mr Male and his late wife Edna ( who predeceased him in June 1968 ) bought a home in Oakey. In his latter days, spent at MYLO CITIZENS HOME in Toowoomba, brought much joy to young and old, in the playing of his beloved mouth organ. He is survived by 4 sons, John ( Brisbane ), Frank ( Toowoomba ), Allan ( Brisbane), and Les ( Toowoomba), and 2 daughters, Bett ( Mrs Benekie, Monto ), Joyce ( Mrs Peters, Maclagan ), and 28 grandchildren. His younger brother, Frank lives in Brisbane.

Note ~~10 .. John a few years ago had heart surgery. He was nursed in prince Charles hospital by Carol Male. Turns out her husband may be related. Year 1998 saw John back in hospital, but this time with a knee reconstruction job. Had a few stints in hospital with the knee. John refers to his wife, Clare, as RHB. Short for Red Haired Bitch. I might add that I think that is uncalled for. John noted for his shortness of temper. John suffered a massive heart attack, leaving him brain dead. Life support system switched off on the 28th January 1999.

Note ~~11. Frank and Jim Male are 4th cousins, once removed. In that side of the MALE Clan, Frank is referred to as “ the gentle giant “. Frank was an engine driver in the Qld railways and spent years in Injune and then Toowooma before retiring to Pialba, Hervey Bay. Frank had a knee replacement January 1996, and Frank and June did around Australia holiday by caravan in 1996/98. June was the motivating force that got Jim Male going on the TREE, and they swap all information they unearth. Frank and Jim are also 7th cousins once removed as well as 9th cousins once removed.

Note ~~ 12..Ros and Christopher are engaged to be married. Probably for about 9 years by now. Ros is a nurse with the Blue Nursing Service in Hervey Bay. Ros was giving a talk to a group of women at Hervey Bay about the Blue Nursing Service and after the talk a woman approached Ros and said she was distantly related to the males. Ros took her name and address, gave it to June. June was around to the womans place like a rat up a drain pipe. The woman was Middy Sprouting. Turns out that Middys great great grandfather and Franks great great grandmother were brother and sister. Draytons. Middy hadn’t long returned from England where she spent considerable time at the St Marys Church in BARRINGTON where she hand recorded births and marriages of the Draytons, the Winters and the Males. Middy made the notes available to June. Ros and Christopher married May 1999. Only bride, groom and both sets of parents present.

Note ~~13 Allan is a Minister with the Church of Christ. He is the motivating force behind the Shaftesbury Campus at Burpengary. In 1997 he was the Director General of the State Family Services Department.. A few years prior to this he had serious abdominal surgery and at the time was only given a 10% chance of pulling through. The Rev is now retired, but still caught up in church work.

Note ~~14. Frank returned from WW1 without one arm. For a while he lived in Hughenden where he had a milk shop and run the local picture Show. Some of the other Males who lived in that area did not realise that they were distantly related. It was only after seeing this Tree that they understood. This Frank Male is an uncle to Frank Male of PIALBA.

Note ~~ 15. Mark and Mary Ann MALE were 2nd cousins, once removed. Arrived in Australia in 1888. Chloe Male of Ilminster, Somerset, now realises what the scandal in the family was about. Mark is her grandfather. While married to Mary Ann, he fathered a child to Mary Ann’s sister, Leigh. Leigh is Chloe’s grandmother and never married.

Note ~~ 16. Hazel RUDGE lives in WALES. She says she still has relatives in the back-blocks of NSW. In a letter to June MALE, Hazel mentions that she had 2 aunts in NSW. One was Mrs Stan HAZELL nee Winifred MALE, and the other was Mrs John JENKINS nee Ruby Estrella MALE. Hazel believes that Ruby died in a car accident about 1985. At one time some of them lived at 192 Carbon St, Railway Town, BROKEN HILL. Jim Male hasn’t been able to get a reply from the occupants of 192 Carbon St. 2008. Jim and Dorothy visited Hazel in 2007. Want to hear something scary ?? Jim and Dorothy decided as they went across the bottom end of Wales that as they were ahead of time they would visit Hazel unannounced. Jim had never met Hazel or spoken to her. Hazel when we met, still thought I was married to Joan and still on the farm in Beerburrum. The scary part is that the night before we arrived to see Hazel, her daughter had gone to a meeting where the medium there told her that on the tomorrow her mother would have distant relatives from Australia visit her.

Note ~~ 17. It appears that Eunice’s children are base born. Can’t find where John Paul Male comes from. The 2nd Phyllis Male born 1818 is listed in the 1993 LDS Index as a child of John Paul MALE, BUT the St Mary’s Church Records record her as a daughter of Emma MALE.. This leaves a problem. Have we 2 Phyllis Males here – one whose mother is Eunice and one whose mother is Emma, or do we have 2 children of Eunice, the first dying as a baby and is Eunice’s other christain name Emma ? In 2000, it now loks like she is the 2nd daughter of Unice prior to marriage to John Paul Male.

Note ~~ 18.John and Jane came out on the boat “ Genghis Klan”. leaving Portsmouth and arriving Moreton Bay 18/8/1854. Del Male tells me that the John Oxley Library have both John and Jane aged 24 years on arrival. Lynda Male of Townsville tells me that the literature at the James Cook University has John aged 23 and Jane 22. I was unable to find where their descendants got to until a sheer piece of luck in April 1998, when I wrote to a W. Male in Sydney.

Note ~~19. I took the address of a W. Male ( the last name Male in the Sydney telephone Directory ), while I was on a flying weekend visit to Sydney early April 1998. Wrote to the person and got a reply from Neville Male of New Zealand. He had been visiting his maiden aunt in Sydney when my letter arrived. Neville could take me back as far as John and Jane, and I could take him back from there.
