Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost

Reformation Sunday

29 October 2006

10 o’clock in the morning

Welcome to this Service of Worship at First Congregational

Church. This is Ingathering Sunday when through the sharing of our pledged intentions the church is energized for ministry and mission in the coming year. We are growing gifts with God as the life of worship, caring, witness and study point to the manifold expressions of love shared in and through our community of faith. In the evocative words of poet and Christian, Gerald Manly Hopkins:

“ I have life left with me still

And thy purpose to fulfill;

Yea, a debt to pay thee yet;

Help me, Lord, and so I will …”

First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God's guidance in our journey of faith.

CALL TO WORSHIP

*OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION

New Century Hymnal 439 to the tune EIN’ FESTE BURG

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

OPENING PRAYER (in unison)

O God of the crossroads,

whose presence is made known in the

unexpected prod to make decisions about our life,

draw near to us in this hour of renewal

that we might make wise choices which help

your futures to happen in our midst

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSING TO GOD

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison)

Wise and powerful God, you have given us your light and truth to guide us through confusion,

yet we have relied instead on our human wisdom and

have lost our way.

You offer to share our burdens and give us strength,

yet we trust in our own efforts and find ourselves exhausted.

Forgive us, and bring us back into your presence, O God;

overcome our separation from one another and from you.

By your Word and Spirit,

fill us with the gifts that equip us to meet life’s demands,

that we may be your people in the world

and live in the confidence and joy of Jesus Christ,

in whose name we pray. Amen.

Proverbs 1: 1-7

F

or learning about wisdom and instruction,
for understanding words of insight,
for gaining instruction in wise dealing,
righteousness, justice, and equity;
to teach shrewdness to the simple,
knowledge and prudence to the young—
let the wise also hear and gain in learning,
and the discerning acquire skill,
to understand a proverb and a figure,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.

SCRIPTURE ANTHEM The Chancel Choir

Teach Me, O God Thomas Attwood

Teach me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes
And I shall keep it unto the end.

SECOND LESSON

Mark 10: 46-52

T

hey came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stood still and said, ‘Call him here.’ And they called the blind man, saying to him, ‘Take heart; get up, he is calling you.’

So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.

Then Jesus said to him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ The blind man said to him, ‘My teacher, let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your faith has made you well.’ Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

Philippians 2: 1-5

f then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.

SERMON

“A Wise Investment” Dr. David D. Young

*Affirmation of faith

Leader: Having gifts that differ according to the grace given us. Let us use them.

People: Now there are varieties of gifts, but always the same Spirit. There are all sorts of service to be done, but always the same Lord, working in all sorts of different ways in different people.

Leader: We dedicate these gifts of offerings and pledged intention in the awareness that we do not walk alone.

People: And yes, we dedicate these gifts of our gratitude, trusting in the power of God to direct and inform their use in the life of this church.

Leader: Lord, Lord, all voices say and all together

People: Give us your day, that once more we may be the endless miracle that embodies you.

Paul of Tarsus/Conrad Aiken

*Gloria Patri (Pilgrim Hymnal 513 )

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER AND QUIET MEDITATION

LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM The Chancel Choir

Carolyn Paulus, soprano

Gregory Gardner, baritone

Let This Mind Be In You Mrs. H. H. A. Beach

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal

with God.

But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of

a servant,
and was made in the likeness of men:
and being found in fashion as a man,
He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death

of the Cross.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him,
and given Him a name which is above ev'ry name:
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2: 5-11

*Doxology (Pilgrim Hymnal 515)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
