Lesson 5

In today’s lesson, you will learn how to use Word to write several draft paragraphs.

After you have read your biography, open Word and go to Format, Paragraph.

Change the line spacing to Double. Click OK.

Change your font size to 14.

Now you can begin to write about your subject.

Some questions to help you write about your person:

What are the facts of their life?

Was there a difficulty this person faced?

How did they overcome this problem?

What were the person’s achievements?

Why is this person a good example?

Do you have anything in common with your subject?

What do you admire about them?

When you have finished writing your draft paragraphs, save your document as Biography.

Lesson 6

Open Biography.doc and continue writing your draft.

When you are ready to begin revising, do a spelling and grammar check: go to Tools, Spellling and Grammar. Correct the spelling and grammar, as you have been shown by your teacher.

Save your document!

To see how readable your document is, try this:

Go to Tools, Spelling and Grammar and click Options at the bottom of the box.

Under Grammar, check the box Readability Statistics, and click OK. This will show you statistics about your document, such as how many sentences and words you have, as well as the grade level of your writing.

Try the Thesaurus:

Pick out a word that you would like to replace with a better word. Highlight the word and go to Tools, Thesaurus. Look over the options and choose a new word.

Add a graphic to your document:

Use the Clip Gallery as your teacher has shown you to add pictures to your document. Remember to make sure the pictures are meaningful to your story.

Insert, Picture, Clip Art.

Choose a picture from one of the categories and click Insert.

Double-click the picture, and go to the Layout tab. Choose Tight and click OK. Now you can move your picture wherever you would like in the document.
