Fiber Footprint Survey - Indonesia

Introduction

Company Name is committed to eliminating our use of fiber from Endangered and High Conservation Value forests and to preventing further negative impacts on the natural forests of Indonesia, the global climate or the rights of forest dependant communities. To these end, we are seeking to:

(1)work with suppliers that are willing to be environmental leaders

(2)better understand the supplier and forest of origin for our paper and eliminate fiber from Endangered and HighConservationValueForests (?and from highly controversial suppliers?) in Indonesia

(3)support restoration of degraded forests or peat lands

(4)maximize recycled and FSC certified fiber in the papers we use

Survey

1. Please list the paper manufacturer(s) is/are currently producing the most common book papers that we use?

Please provide:

  • mill names and locations (including country of origin, state or province, and nearest city)
  • any environmental attributes including FSC or other certification, recycled content levels, bleaching technology
  • any legal issues or social or environmental controversies company is currently facing (e.g. are there outstanding criminal investigations or judgments or conflicts with local communities or environmental issues that have been covered in the media?)

2. For each manufacturer, please provide a supplier profile including:

For paper companies or parent companies that own or manage forestlands

  • Percent of wood, chips, or pulp originating from Indonesian forests including percentage details about whether the material is sourced from natural forests or existing plantations, and what percentage of these are located on peat soils
  • Whether company is engaged in or purchasing fiber from the conversion of natural forests to plantations
  • Company sustainability goals including (1) plans for assessing and protecting high conservation value forests, (2) commitment to transparency, (3) commitments to partner with NGO’s and communities including respect for the right of indigenous peoples to give or withhold their free, prior and informed consent to proposed developments on their customary lands,(4) commitment to end natural forest conversion to plantations, and (5) commitment to end harvesting or purchasing fiber from natural forests in Indonesia
  • Information on 3rd party verification for any of the above-mentioned claims
  • Plans for restoring “wastelands” or degraded forests
  • Plans for obtaining FSC certification and/or increasing use of recycled fiber
  • Maps of fiber basket

For paper companies or parent companies that source pulp, wood chips, or paper on the open market

  • Percent of wood pulp sourced from the open market including (1) pulp supplier name and location, (2) country and state or province of origin of pulp, chips, or paper
  • Percent of wood, chips, or pulp originating from Indonesian forests including percentage detail whether the material is sourced from natural forests or plantations, and what percentage of these are located on peat soils.
  • Whether suppliers are engaged in or purchasing fiber from the conversion of natural forests to plantations
